house rental / Green Management

We just returned from a wonderful experience in Playa Chiquita Costa Rica. We stayed in a house managed by Green Management. Casa Chiquita Verde was the perfect house for 7 people (4 were children)The surroundings were beautiful. Yes we saw monkeys, sloths, toucans and many more interesting creatures.
Green Management was very accommodating and easy to deal with. We had a couple of stores close by and good food...I did not have a bad meal while I was in Costa Rica ....Everything was fresh and you may have to wait for it but time goes by very slowly which was great!!! I am trying to figure out when I can get back and I will contact Green Management again....and by the way I was worried about mosquitoes but they were not a problem in July...go figure?

We just returned from 18 days at Casa Tres Monos and it was great. You can just sit on the porch and watch the wildlife unfold in front of your eyes. Day or night -- it doesn't matter -- somethings always going on. The gardens were beautiful and we loved every minute of it.

Thanks Dennis and Rona for your comments. We appreciate you letting us know about your problems at Caribe Town and we apologize for your troubles. Since this event, the ownership has indeed changed. I have met the new owners and toured the property and I feel very confident now in recommending Caribe Town to our clients. The new owners Jessica and Kyle have done a great renovation of the property and everything looks fresh and inviting now! And the feedback we've gotten since the change is 100% positive.

I cannot recommend this company highly enough. We pre-booked almost all of our vacation activities through them, and from their prompt and couteous responses before we ever left the states to the wonderful service they provided in country, we have no complaints. The tours they offer are wonderful. One of our tours had to be cancelled due to recent heavy rains, and they replaced it with another tour that turned out to be one of the best we did. I cannot say enough about the ease of transportation thanks to Gecko. Shuttles were on time, clean, and got us where we needed to go no matter where we were, and were much more affordable than some other companies' transpotation services. Gecko made everything so easy, all we had to do was sit back, relax and enjoy one of the greatest vacations we've ever had.

Thanks

November...

November is a rainy month. You should see weather chart on this sight under the "about" link. It will give you a good idea what to expect.

as for Rockin J's... That is really a personal opinion. I think if you are a "party girl" you will like it. However as far as hostels go, I think Pagalu is most popular. Personally I like the serene vibe that Olah and Kathy offer at Vista Verde.

Hungry animals

I know the feeling of heart wrenching when you see hungry animals! There are some in all places in Central America. You cannot get away from that! There are less homeless in P.V , but there are some. It is SAD! Alot of the dogs roaming around are owned by people that live there.

Yes...you can rent a place without ac.....we always do. Fans are great and they are in most places. I take lots of cool showers or just swim on the beach or local swimming spots. July ...it can rain some , but mostly in the afternoons or night. No...it is not too touristy at all. I stay in Playa Chiquita and love it there. There are busses to town or you can ride bikes too. (a little long). Come .....you will LOVE it . The beaches are beautiful and so are the people. Don not leave stuff unattended on any beach and try to get a security safe in your room.

malnurished animals?

Hi. I am animal sensitive. I loved Montezuma, but saddened by hungry, often pregnant animals, (which I tried to help). I loved Barcelona years ago, but was upset by live chickens hanging by their legs, for example. But I don't like really touristy areas.
Are there stray, hungry dogs and cats roaming in Puerto Viejo? Thanks.
Also, if we came in mid July, would there be enough sun and swimming days? Would be be ok renting a place without a/c?
And is high speed internet available? Thanks again.

What a beautiful location! This was an excellent place to spend a morning while in Puerto Viejo.
We were introduced to many snakes (caged) which helped us recognize the dangerous ones while hiking later on our trip.
We were able to spend time up close and personal with the monkeys I could hear, but never see more than a shape as they stayed high in the trees.
The staff and owners were interesting, involved and cared about these injured or young animals.
The sloths, owls, frogs and cats all found their way onto my scrapbook.
This was a very nice tour. I learned a lot and appreciate their rescue efforts. I'll tour again next time I am there.

Very Open Atmosphere

We fit into the "middle-aged couple" category and visited with our guide from San Jose.

The locals are part naive, but mainly just accepting of people of all nature. Given the incredible diversity of residents there is no other choice than acceptance. All share a climate that makes many wonder, "How do you live there?"

We encountered numerous usually younger gay men and couples on the beaches as well as a pair of local non-stray male dogs who always seemed to follow gay men and ignore the bitches.

The signs were evident in tight trunks that often wound up around necks once in deeper water.

What are people saying about us?

Mike T. from Southeast Missouri, USA
Great Place to Visit

We visited Puerto Viejo for 8 nights in early April.

We live in the mid-Mississippi valley where heat and humidity are legendarily awful in the summer as are poisonous plants and a huge variety of sucking, stinging and poisonous insects and arachnids.

I am happy to report:

1) At similar temperature (33C or so) we found Puerto Viejo much more comfortable than SE Missouri, especially at night. The "jungle A/C" (a ceiling fan) in our cabin was all we needed for sleeping in perfect comfort.

2) I encoutered very, very few biting insects even when hiking through jungle in shorts, no shirt and little if any active insect repellant. Even better, there are no plants like poison ivy or oak to which I am extrordinarily sensitive.

3) The sun is INTENSE! One of my traveling companions insisted he could spend some time in the sun on the beach with just some oil for sunblock! Wrong! 10 minutes per side and he had a painful, blistering burn.

4) The mood is exquisitely laid back and informal and the diversity of people reminded me of the Rambles in Barcelona. Those who smoke green will find high company which may contribute to the generally delicious food served at restaurants.

5) The waves tend to be large and rip currents are very common. The "coasta rocka" reefs are SHARP. Body surfing in nearly 2 meter waves was fun but I was certain to ensure there were no reefs ahead of me! The calmer coves tend to be very crowded. Great snorkeling, mostly in the occasional calm shallow among the reefs.

Comment on Jacaranda Hotel and Jungle Garden

What are people saying about us?

Vandana from Fort Lauderdale, FL

I visited Puerto Viejo for 15 days and stayed at Jacaranda Cabinas for my entire trip. Each morning I woke up to the peaceful sounds of birds from the garden surrounding my room. The hotel is well kept and during my stay you can tell the owner and staff took pride in ensuring the rooms, entrance, hallways and even the community kitchen was kept spotless. Although the rooms did not have air condition, with the ceiling fans, that was enough to keep us cool. After all, you ARE in the jungle!. There were some clients that came and left because the hotel did not offer TV and AC. If you come to P.V to watch TV might as well stay home and if you NEED air condition, then you have no appreciation for nature and should stay in the city.. P.V has so many activities, by the time the evening, you should be so exhausted, you just want to have a shower, meal and pass out til the morning for more fun in the sun!. If you really need to see Television, in the internet room (which by the way has free wireless and a computer), there's a TV. There are hammocks located throughout the hotel so like on rainy or lazy days, you can just chill and read a book, relax or fall asleep and enjoy the tranquilly and sounds of the forest.

The day time Manager, Neomi is absolutely wonderful!. She's very knowledgeable on all activities and is always willing to help you make arrangements. The fact that she's always pleasant and has a smile makes you feel welcomed. In the evening, if you're lucky to catch Vera the Owner, she can tell you lots about P.V as she's lived there over 20 years and have seen the town grow from little or no hotels to what it is today. Also, she's fun to talk to, but as I said, if you're lucky to catch her.. She's always bustling around tweaking her Garden, which she's planted if not every, most the trees you see. She's also responsible for the decor of the entire hotel and rooms. Each piece of furniture you see throughout the hotel was hand picked by her during her many international travels..

The hotel is also conveniently located one block from the Mega Supermarket, the Pizza shop and bread & Chocolate. Two blocks from the main street where can always find a taxi or walk to the many activity centers and restaurants & bars (I'll recommend restaurants & bars in later comments)

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting P.V!.. O yeah.. and the prices per room is UNBEATABLE!.

As I write this comment, I'm in San Jose airport leaving this wonderful Island of Costa Rica.

I'll be writing a blog about my stay in P.V, Bocas del Toro and San Jose on Trip advisor so you can check out my recommendations on restaurants, activities etc..

Car Rental

Car rental need not be expensive in Costa Rica but there are a couple things to keep in mind:
- The insurance coverage can be as much or more than the rental rate quoted online. If you have all the insurance you need already make sure you bring documentation of that as they will expect you to prove it. Even then, I recommend using a reputable international chain.
- I don't recommend people not familiar with the routes drive at night in Costa Rica. Road conditions and signage are not what we are used to from the developed world. Sun sets about 5:30pm-5:45pm yearround (sunrise is really early) so keep that in mind if you are planning to drive to the Caribbean after arriving on an afternoon flight.

Our group of 4 returned from Costa Rica about a month ago, and we all agreed that it was one of the best vacations we'd ever been on. We had the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation! Gecko Trails booked all of our accommodations and tours, including a zipline tour, white water rafting, and volcano tour. All of the tours were amazing, and our guides were awesome! The hotels were also top-notch...we stayed at the Arenal Manoa in La Fortuna, then at Banana Azul in Puerto Viejo. We can't wait to go back, and we would definitely use Gecko Trails again.

Just a thought - I checked out the cost for shuttles, private shuttles, etc. and found that renting a car is actually cheaper. We really prefer to drive ourselves anyway. If you're going to and from San Jose, we've had great experiences with Wild Rider Motorcycle (they have 4x4s) but if you need to pick up or drop in another location you might check out Poas or Adobe. We're going to Costa Rica again in August, taking a boat from Tortugeuro to Limon, picking up a 4x4 in Limon from Adobe, staying near Puerto Viejo for a few nights and dropping the car at our hotel in Alajuela three days later - all for $204. There's not even any drop charges.

Not to be melodramatic, but Banana Azul literally changed my wife's and my life. We went to CR on our honeymoon, and really did not know what to expect, only knowing that a friend had said "go to Puerto Viejo" and on Trip Advisor Banana Azul was rated #1, and everyone was saying these insanely positive things, so we figured what the hell, lets stay there. Well I'd give just about anything to be back there right now. It really is the energy of the place, from the the land to the hotel itself to the Flora and Fauna of the area, but most of all the wonderful energy that Colin and Roberto have put into Banana Azul. My wife and I were so affected by it and inspired we began to ask ourselves questions about our own life and happiness. It almost sounds cliche but while lying in hammocks in the downstairs area watching leafcutter ants and reading some inspiring books strategically strewn about the coffeetables, we realized that we needed to correct the course of our life, and pursue dreams we had forsaken several years before. Long story short, we returned to our life in the US, quit our jobs, sold our house, and moved to the city we'd always dreamt of living in. We are now pursuing our dream, making music full time, have a baby on the way, and just frikkin happy like nobodies business. We really really appreciate Colin and Roberto for the insight they gave us and are so happy to see how well Banana Azul is doing!

Don't try to blame local expat stratification with the price of a damn beer. The local scene here is dominated by lowlifes that refuse to work, base their whole future plans on knocking up a foreigner and taking her for all she has, and stealing whatever they need along the way.
Stop trying to bull$h!t people in the name of keeping customer coming in.

I have stayed several times at hotel guarana. I live in Costa Rica and travel to Puerto Viejo and then to Bocas Del Toro every 90 days to update my passport. I can tell you that hotel quarana is very clean, safe and very friendly staff. My room was cleaned everyday, clean towels, and linen. I enjoy the patio laying in the hamock, its very peaceful and tranquil. The property is kept very clean. Nice communal kitchen to cook, and best of all a brand new Mega Super grocery store right next to the hotel which is great, no long walk to the store. Puerto Viejo to Osa

Good questions Danna (I moved your comment to the transport page by the way).

Well with this plan you'll spend one very long day (or two shorter days) in transit between the Caribbean and Osa. There are two possible routes:

1. Back to San Jose via Bus or shuttle and then fly or shuttle to Osa. You can see nationwide shuttle schedules here or nationwide buses here. The San Jose to Osa shuttles leave only in the morning though but a bus might work. Or better, get a shuttle to San Jose and then a Sansa or Nature Air flight.

2. The other route is a little more adventurous but perhaps more direct. It involves traveling from Puerto Viejo to Changuinola in Panama (see the Bocas section on this page for instructions) and then a bus from Changuinola to David, Panama and then another bus from David to your destination in Osa. Panama has a road from the Caribbean to Pacific which doesn't involve as big a backtrack as going back to San Jose but obviously it adds complexity with the borders, etc.

Thanks to Gecko Trail Adventures, my partner and I had a wonderful, worry-free week in Costa Rica. We simply sent Gecko Trail an e-mail describing the kind of vacation and activities we wanted (both adventurous and relaxing), and Nina set up everything: the hotels, the tours, the shuttle vans. She responded to all our e-mailed questions promptly, thoroughly and kindly. The shuttle vans always arrived right on time, and without fail the tour guides—whether for the hike around Arenal Volcano, the rain-forest hike to Rio Celeste, whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River or snorkeling in the Caribbean—were knowledgeable, friendly and eager to ensure we had a great time. In La Fortuna, the lovely, immaculately landscaped hotel El Silencio del Campo is a gem; each room is its own cabin, with a picture-book view of the volcano. And in Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean, Banana Azul hotel is another terrific find: a 12-room B&B on well-tailored grounds with a
pool, open-air bar/restaurant and other amenities, all a stone’s throw from the ocean. Gecko Trail helped us experience so many of the wonders of this beautiful country without having to handle any hassles.

What are people saying about us?

James J from Tellico Plains, USA

Well I don't know where to begin so I will start from Nov 08. I booked the hotel through Gecko Travel and obviously didn't do enough research. When I arrived the hotel owner Colin was very nice to me, I could tell that he preferred the same sex. No big deal except that he kept sticking his tongue out at me. I assume this a sign to feel for others of his type. To each his own. I noticed that there were quit a few more that were the same way. One of Colin's guest followed me around for two days before I told Nina from Gecko about it. She asked me why I booked this hotel then and that I should have known because of the rainbow flag. I am a country boy from south Alabama, how was I supposed to know what that meant. Every straight person I talked to did not know this either. I assume that they do this on purpose because they know straight people have reservations towards them somewhat. She asked if I would like to change hotels. I said no I will try to stay here. Immediately afterwards Colin became rude with me and the other dude backed off so I know Nina talked to at least Colin. The next day I saw Roberto and I said something about the poodle messing with the other dogs. He quickly informed me that it was his dog and it was none of my business. I did not feel that it was that big of a deal.
I was booked for Tortugara and the Pacure. Colin told me that I would be going with another couple down the Pacure but I was actually supposed to be going to Tortugara. I packed an extra pair of shorts and a shirt and that was all. I know that it was my fault that I was not sure of where and what I was doing, but I was on a very nice vacation and didn't pay attention. They could not rebook me so I went and made the most of it and had a blast, met some nice ladies!
I got my laundry done through the hotel and my clothes came back cold, damp, and wrinkled. I complained to the owner but he blew me off because of the humid atmosphere. The next time I took my clothes down town, they came back superb, crisp, clean, no wrinkles.
I was interested in possibly purchasing some land there and the guy that followed me around suggested a Tico that he used. They knew that this was going on and did not inform me of the risks. The Tico tried to sell me an acre of land for 90,000 but I was not interested. On the way back, the same piece of land was now only 60,000. hmmm! I wonder if Colin's buddy was getting some of his money back?
Now for my next trip which just finished. I arrived on the 7th of May 2010. Roberto was very nice and accommodating towards me but he and a few others kept on mentioning "trying new things." I am friendly but not that friendly. I am open and brushed it off.
I spoke with David the receptionist about two days later and didn't understand his response. I asked him to repeat himself and he got huffy with me. I apologized for the inconvenience on his part.
Well my time to depart came and I packed my bags. I told David that I would be there from the 7th of May through the 11th. He told me that he booked me next door and it was my fault. He proceeded to tell me that the way I emailed it meant that I would be there through the 11th and leave the 12th. I didn't argrue again and he told me he would fix it. If you were to tell someone that you were going to stay Monday through Thursday, would that mean that you are leaving Friday? Maybe we are from different countries or something. I got the feeling that he knew it was more of his fault than mine and was trying to shuffle the blame.
I ended up getting a cold and found out that the server had a virus with swollen glands. These people make enough money to send them home so as to not infect their guests, like me. I don't know where I picked it up but when someone is sick serving you food, that is not good.
When I came to check out, the co-owener Roberto was standing right there so I didn't want to cause a scene in pardise. Being a return customer I was supposed to receive a 10% discount but I did not.
All in all it is a wonderful place. It is a place to love and be loved, I enjoyed the squeaky beds. They have very accommodating staff and the grounds are exceptional thanks to Rick. Franklin the bartender makes the best drinks around. The food is wonderful. Almost everyone is how do you say, tranquilo. The security is great also. I still recommend this place for the value but I would rate my stay as a 6 out of 10 unlike the previous time which I would give a 9.
Leave your "reservations" at home if you are straight or prude and you will have a great time! Pura Vida!

Bill can help you with anything and everything..They have kayaks, boogie boards,snorkels,bikes... His cooking is the best and you can even get ice cream for desert.. The view is unbelievable. Its quite and secluded and very cozy. I highly recommend pachamama, It is the only place I will stay. Thanks once again for a great place to relax and enjoy the view.... TC..

Loved it!

Had dinner there last evening and were treated wonderfully by Minerva and Melvin. Utterly _loved_ the Ron Centenario XX. Could drink it all the time.

Consider Chile Rojo to be your "go to" restaurant in Puerto Viejo. Good food and good people watching from the seats overlooking the street.

Need reservations for September travel?

Thanks so much for your replies--they are so very helpful! I'm curious if I need to book a place in advance in mid-September or if I will be able to find economical places when I get there? I was looking at a place with communal kitchen and inexpensive rooms, but don't know if I should try and book it in advance? I am not really fond of planning ahead unless I have to.

Weather in Sept/Oct is the dry season!

Make sure you check the weather page as well. Sept/Oct is the rainy season on the Pacific Coast and the central valley but not in the Caribbean. Seasonality is much more nuanced here but Sept/Oct are actually the driest months of the year historically.

You are going at the most beautiful time of year! Not much rain at all in September and the seas are calm. The animal sanctuary is all indoors...so no worries there. Don't worry...just go and have fun. It will all be for naught!

Tours during rainy season

How do they handle the tours during the rainy season? Do they still do tours in the rain, or do they just do them in the early part of the day? The ones I'm interested in are the animal sanctuary/reptile viewing tours from Puerto Viejo. Are these still as good during the rainy season? I'd like to find out before I book a long stretch of time there in September.

Poor Service at hotel

I brought in a school group through Swiss Travel. We were very disappointed with your hotel. My fellow chaperone and I spent a HOT night in a room with a broken airconditioner. Your front desk staff did nothing to rectify the situation and the manager treated us very poorly. I found the meals to be mediocre. I had students staying in triple accomodation and no cots were provided for them.

My Costa Rica Trip with Gecko Trail Adventures...

Yetty helped me with all the details for a 9 day Coast to Coast Trip between 4/9/10 and 4/18/10. Though we had one issue with one hotel (their air-conditioning/lights were not dependable, both of which we had said were an absolute must) and we had to switch hotels, Yetty helped us get our money refunded for the other nights. We are incredibly grateful to her and Gecko Trail for helping us with that. Everything else was perfection, in fact beyond our wildest imagination!

The rest of the hotels were great: San Bosco had a great view of the Arenal volcano; La Isla, in Puerto Viejo, on the Carribean side, had wonderful owners who when my mom hurt her toe, referred her to the best and nicest and closest doctor, and they had great breakfast ond lunches, and beautiful rooms right across the beach, and again, I cannot say enough about how kind and concerned about our comfort the owner Petra was to us; Adventure Inn in San Jose had a great huge room with a cool look and yummy breakfast.

The guides for our tours were excellent, absolutely amazing! We had a wonderful guides for Manuel Antonio Park and Damas Mangrove Sanctuary on the Pacific side---we were able to see so many animals, either up close or through a telescope that allowed us to feel upclose (white-faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, two-towed and three-towed sloths, iguanas, basilisks, the ferdilance snake, red-eyed green leaf frog, etc.)! The Toboccan Springs were unreal--being there felt and looked like heaven--and to top it off, we saw lava going down the volacano from there! We had a great Scuba Diving guide on the Carribean coast and I was able to see a huge spotted eagle ray! Our guides for the night Leatherback Turtle Laying Tour was beyond our wildest expectation--we were right next to the 5 foot turtle and saw and heard the whole process!!!! Our guide for Manzanillo-Gandaco Wildlife Refuge went out of his way to find the best place for spotting Spider Monkeys and Toucans, exactly what we had asked to see!

And our tranzportation was airconditioned, safe, dependable and comfy---they had shuttles with drivers who were friendly and accomodating!

This was my first vacation and I am so lucky that Gecko Trail, and especially Yetty, helped me make my family's and my dreams come true!!!! Thank you so much for all your effort Yetty--I am so grateful for your help and effort!!!!!!

Schools for young children

We are thinking about moving to PV and are interested in enrolling our children in school there. Unfortunately, they have no Spanish speaking experience. Are there schools in PV that have both spanish and english?
