What are people saying about us?

A & A from Toronto, Canada

This review has been long overdue and I'm hoping Bill & Cathy can forgive us. We were at Pachamama in Feb 2009. The weather was up and down and it rained more than expected, taking away opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving. We cut our vacation short by a day so we could get back to San Jose and dry out a bit. That being said, it was one of the best vacations I had.

Pachamama is simple accommodations but really has everything you need. Its quiet and remote while still having the amenities. There are restaurants within walking distance and lots of things to do such as: sloth sanctuary, iguana rescue, Cahuita, Manzanillo, ziplining, etc. The houses are beautiful and pretty private from each other. Wildlife is right there overhead, so if you want to sit on the balcony, you can spend the day just watching.

Bill and Cathy make the place stand out from anywhere else. They are friendly and accommodating. They are amazing cooks and really put their hearts into making your vacation. They provide a wealth of information about the surrounding area and will assist guests with making arrangements. It was a great vacation, I just wish the weather had of been more cooperative.

Our trip to Costa Rica

We had an OUTSTANDING trip in Costa Rica and loved, loved, loved the itinerary you put together for us, the quality of the activities, the people we met along the way, the country, the places we stayed, and we would not change a thing. It was exactly the adventure we were seeking and you made our dreams possible! Everything went without a problem. We have each traveled extensively and usually book our own itinerary, but the package you put together was very authentic and it seemed that it was our own customized work. Gracias, gracias, gracias!

Would I be cutting it to close ????

My flight is scheduled to leave San Jose International at 4:01 PM CST on 22 MAY 2010. If I booked the Transpana service departing at 8:45 AM CST, would I be allowing myself enough time to check in and make my flight? How long does it usually take to clear security at San Jose International? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and assist me in my ultimate decision.

I just booked a week trip to CR in middle of June. I'm looking for a very relaxing, comfortable place to stay in PV. I'd prefer to be right on the beach, have a beach view, or at least a very short walk to the beach. I just finish my MBA and need peace and tranquility for a week before heading back to work. Any suggestions?

Safe for a single female?

Hi there. Have your passport and $ in a security box where you stay. Always have a copy on you. Take nothing to the beach. Only a towel, water snack and flipflops. Put keys in the sand...no $ . Where shorts with a zipper and put $ and keys in them (idea) In the evening , take the bus in to town and take a taxi home. That is what we do from Playa Chiquita and it is perfect. There is a 5:00 bus or a little after. Do not walk or ride you bike on the road when it gets really dark. The drivers cannot see you and they are swerving to avoid holes in the road . Puerto Viejo and Cocles are both lovely places. You will feel mor comfortable once you get there! Believe me...I travel alone too and LOVE it there! Relax and enjoy , just take care of your belongings . Have fun!

Thanks for your reply, Doug. I would likely be staying at a private cottage on Cochles Beach. I read that you should not bring valuables to the beach. What about house keys? Is it safe to leave passport and valuables in a typical cottage? Also, is it safe to walk or bike around after dark alone? For instance, would I be able to bike into Puerto Viejo for dinner and get back after dark?

Is it generally safe for a single female who takes the common sense safety precautions?

While the Caribbean Coast doesn't have the same clearly delineated wet/dry seasons like the Pacific Coast does, September is historically one of the driest months of the year. See the weather page for details. On the other hand that's clearly the wet season (euphemistically called the "green season" on the Pacific side). Costa Rica is blessed by a geography that seems to make it not a target of hurricanes.

As far as snakes go, you're in luck. The Jaguar Rescue Center right at Playa Cocles includes an extensive serpentarium.

I am a single female traveling alone to Costa Rica in September. I am trying to decide between Esterillos Oestes in the Central Pacific, Tamarindo in the north Pacific, and Playa Cocles in Caribe Sur. I tend to be an out-of-the-box type of traveler. Get a backpack and go. But I also want to be safe. I will either have money on my person or locked in my cottage (where I will be staying alone). After reading about Puerto Viejo, I'm now leaning toward this town. I will be going in mid-September. Where will I find the mildest weather? Do I need to worry about hurricanes? Any suggestions and information would be useful. I'm driving myself crazy making decisions.

What are the best tours out of Puerto Viejo? I love snakes and am interested in seeing a lot of them. I know there are serpentariums not far from Jaco and Allujela.

WOW! We were so lucky to find this little gem on the beach! 2 years ago B.P (before pool) I spent a week at Banana Azul with friends. I can honestly say it was one of the greatest weeks of my life. The staff at Banana Azul are so warm and welcoming and will gladly go out of their way to accomodate you and make your stay for enjoyable. They also offer you lots of helpful information on the best snorkle spots, local restos, hicking paths to waterfalls, zipline, and other great activities. I have to say, I have travelled Europe a few times and the food we had in in Puerto Viejo was some of the best and most unique I've ever tasted. So frehs, colourful and tasty! The beautiful paradise-like beach, ocean-side hammocks, sunfilled bedrooms, fantastic food and unforgetable hosts really made for an unbelievable trip. I would highly recommend Banana Azul to anyone! I would go back in a heartbeat if I could. PURA VIDA!

Gracias!!!!!! He tenido una gran dosis de PURA VIDA.

We just returned from our trip to Costa Rica and stayed at the Villa Luz y Sombra and had a fantastic time! The house was gorgeous and right from the porch we saw hummingbirds, beautiful butterflies, red-eyed tree frogs, an agouti, and a two-toed sloth!. It is just a 5 minute walk to beautiful, uncrowded beaches. Emmanuelle and Green Management were very attentive to our needs, both before we arrived and during our stay. We (parents and 3 teenagers) were very happy with the whole experience and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the Costa Rica jungle in style!

Colin's advice is right on. If you left at 6am, you'd be pulling into the rental car place about 10am IF THERE WERE NO HOLDUPS. After you returned your car and got the shuttle back to the airport you'd be looking at 10:45 airport arrival which is cutting it way too close.

The transport company generally recommends leaving Puerto Viejo 8 hours before your flight departure to allow time for traffic, road rerouting, a meal break, etc. But if you left at 3:45am you'd be driving in the dark which is also not recommended.

There are some San Jose hotels I'd recommend on this page.

You really need to overnight in SJ for 11:45 departure. We have a rule of thumb at the hotel that any departure before 2pm in the afternoon they should overnight in San Jose. 11:45 is way to early to accomplish that without leaving in the middle of the night.

Many medications which would need a prescription elsewhere don't in Costa Rica, you just need to consult with the pharmacist. But there are many that still are restricted and need a prescription. This would include anything classified as a narcotic or any medication which is often abused (Oxycontin for example).

But again, if you know what you want just talk to the pharmacist first. Sometimes there is actually a doctor on staff at the pharmacy who can write a prescription if it is needed or he can refer you to someone who can.

Taxi+Bus Service

Hi Gail -- The taxi+bus service is very reliable. The bus goes every day as scheduled barring acts of nature (even then the bus is just generally rerouted). The only worry is that it is full but this is really the point of this service that they pre-purchase your tickets so that's not a worry either. The terms and conditions you are reading apply to services like Interbus and Grayline but once they've confirmed your service they are very reliable as well so you won't end up stranded.

If for some reason your flight is late or something, there are buses which go to Limon later as you found out and they leave from the same Caribbean terminal that your driver will bring you too. You'll be able to get a ticket to Limon and then on to Puerto Viejo at the same place, it's not difficult.

Regarding the 4WD: it's not needed if you're just visiting places along the main coastal road between Cahuita and Manzanillo (including Puerto Viejo, Cocles, Chiquita, Punta Uva etc). It could be necessary if you're heading off on smaller roads but that isn't necessary to get to the main points of interest in the area. You can also choose to skip the car and just rent bikes, take the local bus or book tours which include transport.

Guaranteed taxi and bus from SJO to Puerto Viejo and back

Hi,
How nice to have someone to ask. I feel like I really need a vacation now after researching buses, cars, donkeys, etc to get us back and forth from SJO 4/14 to our Punta Uva hotel and back4/21. The terms and conditions state that if bus if full or not enough people we may not get out on days reserved. This would be a BIG problem. What do you think? Can I safely make these reservations? Do they usually go? If this is dicey, can you recommend another means of transport. My guidebook Costa Rica for Dummies lists a company (without a name) that has hourly buses to Limon with a transfer to another bus to Puerto Viejo or Manzanillo (the latter is restricted to 3 pm and 6 pm departures. I tried to call but, alas, my Spanish is not good enough. These buses leave from Radio Casino; their number is 2758-1572. Do you know them? Should I ask my hotelier to call for me?
I so appreciate your help! We're also thinking of renting a car from Poas once we're down there if it looks like it would be easier to get to different towns, etc. Do we need a 4wd for short distances?
Many, Many thanks.
Gail

I have not lived here as long as you have, but I have been long enough to be well aware of the problems of the local community and Costa Rica as a whole.

As for it being "conflicted"... I agree. But I see us as the foreigners with another culture and resources that locals clearly don't have as contributing to a large part of the "conflict".

In saying that, I am not sure what the answer is. I can see where locals want the same standard of living we enjoy and since accomplishing that is virtually impossible on a local level, some will justify "shortcuts" to try and attain many of the things we take for granted.

It has been my observation that many expats that have been here for a long time... I see many are disillusioned by the changes and development in the community and perceive the hotels and owners as the ones to blame because the price of beer has went up and they are looking for greener pastures because they can no longer afford to live there.

The same story happens anywhere you look where capitalism is the order of the day (that would be most of the world). Do I like it? Not really. But it's the system and even if I had a better idea I am too tired try and change it and don't feel being a foreigner here in Costa Rica it is my place to do so.

I was invited by Costa Rican Government through residency program to finance and build a business that would generate tourist dollars and hire local people. It is sad that you don't see that as a contribution to the community and instead that you would suggest that we were being dishonest to people.

I hope you find paradise.

after staying at banana azul you have to hesitate before honestly reviewing it, understanding that each more glowing review threatens it's hidden gem status. my wife found it a year ago doing CR vacation research and it sounded so good we delayed when we couldn't get a room on our only available dates. this year we stayed in the Howler and another room (after a 2 day trip to Tortuguerro arranged by Gecko, their affiliated Tour operation that is equally excellent). BA is a truly unique boutique property that threads the needle for a whole host of variables that can make for a vacation-of-a-lifetime experience: it makes 'rustic' feel opulent and intimate; the decor reflects an extreme attention to detail and the lush landscaping/plantings/open air eco vibe (with a turtle canal virtually underfoot that you have to see) is right out of a movie set for the Secret Tropics. Gecko will set you up on truly amazing adventures but if you want to veg, you'll lack for nothing: it's got a bar and table d'hote food service all day, it manages to balance opulent privacy with divider-screened balconies that you want to just live on, the caribbean is so warm there you can stay in for hours; the pool/jacuzzi set up is very comfortable and welcoming and if you want to make friends, the eating arrangements encourage it. majorly casual. you belong from the moment you arrive. kudos for the concept.

We stayed in the house January, 2010 for 2 weeks and had an amazing time. Recommendations on where to eat, help booking reservations for whatever we wanted to do, bikes to ride, kayaks to play with, you name it. They even collaborated with me on a birthday surprise for Lyra which she absolutely loved. The food is also great and surprisingle affordable, plus the service to your cabin can't be beat. The area was a really laid back and there was a lot to see and do as long as you don't mind a little walk or bike ride. If you're hoping for a wild scene, then you probably want to stay in Puerto Viejo so you can party, party, party. For us, the closeness of nature and the lack of big crowds was the real draw - that and having a few drinks. Thanks for a great adventure Bill & Cathy. We hope to see you again.

Thanks for the reply! I should have been clearer about what I meant by "social life". I wasn't referring to hook-ups but to a community where a single gay guy might find a social outlet to make friends and such. You mention it is "popular with gays in relationships" so perhaps it may not be the place for a single guy.

Gays in Puerto Viejo

There is an increasing presence of gay community and travelers to Puerto Viejo. Popular places that openly welcome gay visitors include Koki Beach restaurant & Hotel Banana Azul. But they are not the only places courting the gay traveler.

Puerto Viejo is a great place for people looking to experience Caribbean / Costa Rican culture in a beach community atmosphere. It tends to be popular with gays in relationships and who are middle aged.

Guys looking to hook up with local guys would not do well. The community is very naive when it comes to gay culture. There are also no venues to facilitate meeting other single gay people. My advice if this is important to you, hang out in San Jose. No shortage of "offerings" there.

Great Shuttle Page

Hi,
I have been traveling throughout Costa Rica for many years and I really like your shared shuttle ride page on your website I recently found. I usually take interbus everywhere and I was aware of grayline, but I didn't really know about the other companies that provide an alternative to the public bus or private transfer. I will definitely be using this page in future travels.

Thanks Again!

Shelly

Gecko trail organised our 2 week holiday in Costa Rica and everything went really smoothly which saved us a lot of time and hassle trying to sort things out for ourselves. we were pleased with all of the hotels we stayed at and all of the trips that we booked were great. Overall I would highly recommend their service.

great trip

We took the "Coast-to-coast: Pacific & Caribbean plus Mountains" trip and added a few days.
It was an excellent way of getting an overview of Costa Rica. We originally were going to rent a car and do something similar ourselves but then we found Gecko / Nina and are very glad we did they offer an excellent service and were very efficient and professional. The travel always arrived on time and the hotels were all good. Their recommendations for alternatives ... were all-good. We would unconditionally recommend booking through Gecko.

The caribbean side is too wet and difficult to get around. Try the Montezuma area on the Pacific coast, its a lot more fun and its safer.

Stayed in Howler Suite in early December 2009 as part of our honeymoon. Just want you to know... DAYDREAMING & MISSING you. Great property, beach and owners. The Howler Suite ROCKED.
Hoping to be back late next November. Leave the lights on for me ;)

Buses on Holidays

As a resident of the area, it is my observation that it almost takes a hurricane for the local buses to stop running. They run on holidays as well. Given that it is a holiday in CR the buses will be very busy. Best to buy tickets in advance with the service offered on this site.

As for private shuttle to Panama from San Jose, just contact the people at Gecko Trail and see if it is running on that day. I am pretty sure it will be.
