The center of the action: where you'll find the most shopping, the nightlife and the biggest selection of restaurants.
Esa página está disponible también en español.
While Puerto Viejo is often used to refer to the whole area or at least include the neighborhoods of Playa Negra, Cocles, Chiquita and Punta Uva, this page concentrates on the center of the action — the small area between the south end of Playa Negra and the north end of Playa Cocles.
This small grid of streets may be just a few square blocks but is packed with an amazing selection of hotels, hostels, restaurants, bars and shopping.
Staying here you'll definitely be closer to the action and some places will be noisier so it's not for all travelers. But around the edges also cluster some quiet and beautiful spots.
Lot's of people enjoy Playa el Chino for swimming while still in easy reach of an beach bar and Playa Negra is just beside as well. Advanced surfers can be found on the Salsa Brava reef just off of downtown.

Playa el Chino
The beach in town is nice if you want to hang out and still be able to pop into any of the nearby restaurants and bars for food and drink. The name comes from the historic Manuel Leon store which was known as "el Chino"

Salsa Brava
The reef right in front of Puerto Viejo is the spot for more advanced surfers. Surfline says: Salsa Brava loosely translated means "angry sauce", and if that ain't a groovy little metaphor, nothing is. It called Costa Rica's heaviest and best wave, and believe it: pound for pound, it's as intense as any coral reef double-up right tube in the world.

I was 2 days here in puertoviejo and liked it a lot. We were staying at casa verde and I had the best breakfast in costa rica at cafe Rico (right towards casa verde). We went to the national park here for snorkeling -> make sure the visibility in the water is good. We rented our gear at „multicentro bike rental“ and got realy Bad Equipment for 20 dollars (broken, not cleaned). When we complained the owner said she will not give us any discount as we already paid in advanced -> Never go to the multicentro bike rental

Julio from The United States Via Panama
Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Limon-South Caribbean side
In response to what I keep reading about this area, I feel everyone has their own opinion or circumstances that forms them. I was born In Panamá, and have family with property in this area for generations. We have been victims of the shortcuts that some use to get ahead such as being robbed in broad daylight in San José while the authorities looked on as if nothing happened. However, I know that this kind of things happens there more than other areas. Just like the Lion knows where to hunt, these people that do this prey on folks who walk right into their hunting ground. Although being born in this area of the world, and living in the big apple for years, I can honestly say that crime is everywhere, and you just hope you never have to go through something like this, but due to the noted conditions you should know that your chances are higher there. Everyone knows that where there's poverty there's higher cases of crime, and it doesn't take a genius to figure this out. However, due to the long struggles of the Caribbean people and their ancestors, you can see how much progress has been made on the long run, and this is not going unnoticed because you can see that tourist still come from all over the world as I will continue too. Most people go to visit an area that left a shining light inside them for ever. I just happened to be born with it, and I hope that most of you that visit Puerto Viejo and its vicinity to really enjoy the best it has to offer, for it really has a lot. Just note that this area someday will be in your heart if its what you're looking for.

Church in Puerto Viegjo
Next Easter (April 8th) I will be taking a student group to Costa Rica... our first few days involve a sea turtle project in Gandoca. Does anyone know if that is within walking distance of the town? Also, I know there is a church... any chance of them having a website? Thanks
March 28, 2011
Doug Dosdall from Puerto Viejo
Several churches in town but definitely no websites that I'm aware of. They're pretty low tech places! Gandoca is quite a distance from Puerto Viejo, over an hour by jeep. You'll need an experienced local driver to get you there. Unless you meant is the project close the village of Gandoca to which I believe the answer is yes.

Jim MacDougall from Puerto Viejo Costa Rica
Tragically conflicted village. At once a very beautiful place and also a very violent place to live or visit. The local hotel owners won't tell you the truth about this but I have lived there for many years.
April 02, 2010
Colin Brownlee from Puerto Viejo
I have not lived here as long as you have, but I have been long enough to be well aware of the problems of the local community and Costa Rica as a whole. As for it being "conflicted"... I agree. But I see us as the foreigners with another culture and resources that locals clearly don't have as contributing to a large part of the "conflict". In saying that, I am not sure what the answer is. I can see where locals want the same standard of living we enjoy and since accomplishing that is virtually impossible on a local level, some will justify "shortcuts" to try and attain many of the things we take for granted. It has been my observation that many expats that have been here for a long time... I see many are disillusioned by the changes and development in the community and perceive the hotels and owners as the ones to blame because the price of beer has went up and they are looking for greener pastures because they can no longer afford to live there. The same story happens anywhere you look where capitalism is the order of the day (that would be most of the world). Do I like it? Not really. But it's the system and even if I had a better idea I am too tired try and change it and don't feel being a foreigner here in Costa Rica it is my place to do so. I was invited by Costa Rican Government through residency program to finance and build a business that would generate tourist dollars and hire local people. It is sad that you don't see that as a contribution to the community and instead that you would suggest that we were being dishonest to people. I hope you find paradise.
April 03, 2010
Rob Panick from Puerto Viejo y Loco
violent
So Colin, do the "shortcuts" you refer to mean taxi drivers setting up and robbing expats after chopping them in the head with a machete? Don't try to blame local expat stratification with the price of a damn beer. The local scene here is dominated by lowlifes that refuse to work, base their whole future plans on knocking up a foreigner and taking her for all she has, and stealing whatever they need along the way. Stop trying to bull$h!t people in the name of keeping customer coming in.

Koki Beach from puerto viejo
Puerto Viejo
Shirley, Puerto Viejo is no more dangerous than any other beach town in Costa Rica and certainly much less dangerous then San Jose. Using common sense will keep you out of most trouble. Use cabs at night, don't bring valuables to the beach and do you ATM visits during the day and you will be fine

The caribbean side is too wet and difficult to get around. Try the Montezuma area on the Pacific coast, its a lot more fun and its safer.

We will be visiting Purto Viejo in August and were just wondering if anyone knows of a Catholic Church in or near Puerto Viejo. Thank you very much for your response.

Comming to Puerto Viejo the end of August 09, has anyone stayed at La Costa de Papito. Have not seen any comments. Also can anyone tell me about these biting flies I have read about. Are they seasonal? Thanks. Lookin forward to trip.

The only biting flies that I know about are not a fly but a flea! They are at the beach only and if you spray Off on your legs no worry, and they are seasonal and this is the season
