I plan to retire in Costa Rica. Why not in Puerto Viejo? If of course I could purchase a piece of land there near the sea. Is there land available at reasonable prices. (3-6 hectares)?

Christmas arrival SJO

Hi there,
Thanks in advance for responding.. I am scheduled to arrive in SJO pretty late around 11pm. Plan is to take the first bus to PV at 6:30 am. Will there be transportation (taxi) into town to a hostel or would it be easier and better option to stay at hotel near SJO since I'm coming in so late? I'm planning on the Caribe Tours bus. Thanks again

Interbus and the other companies are tourist shuttles which are vans which provide door to door service from hotel to hotel. Taxi/Bus is a different type of service; it involves a taxi that picks you up at the airport (or a hotel) and then drives you to a regular bus station (Greyhound style) and includes your ticket on that bus. At your destination you are left at the bus stop in the center of town not at your destination hotel. All this info is on the booking form; if you select the service you want you'll see a lot more info about it.

For the Gecko Trail Airport Express this should be okay as the departure time is directly from the airport. This is what they say for their 15:30 departure: "We recommend this service from San Jose to the Caribbean for flights scheduled to arrive before or at 2.30 pm." Other shuttle companies you have to take account for the fact that you have to get to a departure spot off-airport and that the scheduled time may be earlier in Alajuela where the airport is. Generally one should budget for about an hour before you get out of the airport for getting your luggage and clearing immigration and customs. Another option might be the taxi/bus option which has a departure as late as 16:00. And then there's always the private option which is more expensive but then so is a night's hotel in San Jose. Check the schedules and booking here.

Depends on which hotel in Alajuela. Interbus has a list of hotels they pick up and drop off at. If your hotel is not on their list you need to go a nearby one which is. Fill in the booking form and put your hotel name in their and they'll let you know what the pickup location will be.

Timing of shuttle to Puerto Viejo?

I'm scheduled to arrive at 14:25 p.m. in San Jose, and would like to head directly to Puerto Viejo. However, it seems like this may be too tight of a connection as the last "tourist shuttle" leaves SJO at 15:30. Is this too tight of a connection or is it doable? I'd rather not spend that night in San Jose, but it's certainly an option.

Bus Ticket Back to Costa Rica

In all my travels around South America, I never had this rule enforced anywhere...EXCEPT the Sixola border between Panama and Costa Rica. I was exiting CR. Fortunately I had a plane ticket leaving Panama City to Colombia. There was also a tout offering to sell me a "boat ticket" return knowing I'd NEVER use it and he could make a few bucks. Probably would have paid to not deal with the Panamanian immigration official. Another tactic I usually had prepared is a "fake" or cancelled airline ticket out of the country.

Bus ticket from Panama back to Costa Rica

Actually what I hoped to do was to make a reservation, print it off so I can carry it with me, and then cancel the reservation. I would not leave them hanging because I understand small business issues.
I live in Costa Rica and as much as I would like to leave, it certainly wouldn't be to Panama. And I have 4 dogs here, I would never leave them. I'm just trying to find a way to satisfy their silly laws without it costing me money.

Thanks for sharing your experience Carole. I haven't heard of Panama enforcing this before. Have others had this experience?

As far as places to "reserve" a ticket online that you have no intention of using, I know that this has been a huge issue for the small businesses trying to establish regular transportation services between Puerto Viejo and Bocas. Many people would purchase tickets to Bocas simply to have an onward ticket out of Costa Rica to show Costa Rican immigration and then would demand a refund of the ticket they never expected to use. This created havoc with their schedules and planning so as far as I know all are now charging cancellation fees to discourage this. Remember these are small businesses trying to provide a transportation service; not ways for you to get around customs rules.

Bus ticket from Panama back to Costa Rica Part 2

I and a friend went to Panama two weeks ago to meet some friends for lunch, and Panama refused us entry unless (1) we had a return bus ticket, or (2) we parked our car in the "approved" parking lot on the Costa Rica side where they would give us a receipt showing we parked there and how many people were in the car. We opted for the parking receipt. My friend walked back across the bridge and moved our car to the approved lot. I was told that I only needed to have a reservation on a bus, not the paid for ticket and that Panama would accept that. Does anyone know where I could make such a reservation? I'd like to have the reservation because the "approved" lot is quite expensive and very small so you run the risk of not being able to park there.

While both Costa Rica and Panama have that "onward/return ticket" rule on the books, I've never heard of Panama enforcing it (Costa Rica does ask to see your ticket on occasion).

That said if you want to have a return ticket the bus and shuttle services who provide it are all listed above on this page. The shuttles can be booked online here.

Perfect getaway.

I loved this place!

Very kind people from Holland.
Very mellow and relaxed, anything is possible just ask them, fishing trips,
Jungle tours, bbq,s etc.

Nice clean rooms and the hottest showers I came across in the whole of Costa Rica.
The place is on a good spot in the village, quiet, with the jungle on the backside,
and just 3 minutes away from the best beach I,ve ever seen.
A small walk from the house, on a sand path and you see the bay of Manzanillo.
Beautiful big bay on one side, secluded with tropical forest for long walks and on the other side, just across the creek , small abandoned beaches with great views from the rocky coral formations.

I can recommend Faya Lobi to anyone.

Most people take a taxi; about $25. You can also book a ride in advance with or without your bus tickets prepurchased (great for tight connections or busy dates as some buses sell out) - use booking links above. There are some shared van services who do the route for about $10 a person too. And it would be possible to take the public bus if you've got time and patience but not sure of the routing.

There's just the one parking lot as far as we know, the details are above so use that one. You won't need any extra time because you are driving (unless you were trying to drive across the border in which case you'd need a lot of extra time), just keep in mind the border opening hours. There are generally shuttles/taxis waiting to take you to the boats at all times the border is open. Have fun!

gecko is the best!!!!

without a doubt, gecko trail adventures planned an amazing, custom trip for me and my partner. We started our planning a few months before our trip in may, our trip was in August. We worked directly with Ernesto who was nothing short of amazing in response and suggestions. He made everything so easy via email catering to all our questions and whim. It definitely helped that he was american and had that perspective as he definitely knew what we would like and what we wouldn't. When it came down to the actual trip, everything went down absolutely flawless from start to finish. Every single tour, bus, transport that was scheduled picked us up right on time! As a seasoned traveler that has been around the world, I have always been skeptical of working with travel agencies but Gecko definitely impressed me which says a lot! One of the things that impressed us the most was when we were on our actual trip and wanted to make adjustments, all we did was email them and they responded with the adjustments in a prompt manner, easy!

Our trip path was:

San Jose-Manuel Antonio-Monteverde-Arenal-Tortuguero-Pecuare-Puerto Viejo

See pics here.

We ended our trip in Puerto Viejo were Gecko is based and we were so happy to meet the amazing and friendly staff (especially Ernesto, as he helped us the whole time) and thank them for the amazing trip so far!!! Thanks Gecko, will definitely be booking with you again soon!!!

Eco Friendly Paradise!!

Just got back from Costa Rica a week ago. I spent a month traveling around and I must say that no doubt Cashew Hill was by far my favorite place. Sue and Andrew(owners) along with Edwin(manager) took great care of me. I am a solo traveler and this was my first experience to Costa Rica To say I was a little apprehensive is an understatement. The moment I arrived I knew I was in good hands. They welcomed me at the gate by my name as they were expecting me. Their recommendation for activities, beaches and restaurants were all amazing and Edwin even accompanied me on several occasions per my request. The gardens are well manicured but maintained a jungle feel. The gardens were full of fresh fruits and herbs. My favorite was the Mamon Chino's and star fruit. I picked fresh star fruit off my balcony and enjoyed the complementary coffee at their lounge every morning. I love animals so my main goal was to see as many animals in their natural habitat as possible. To my surprise I hardly had to leave Cashew Hills property to see almost everything I wanted to see. In my short week stay I was able to see Sloths( both 2 toed and 3 toed), Howler monkeys, armadillo, Kinkajou, and Birds of all kinds (various Toucan, Humming birds, Hawlks, Woodpeckers and many many more I could not Identify.) The Cottages were wonderfully decorated and had everything I needed for my stay. The cottages have full kitchens so I was able to prepare some meals at home which was wonderful because it saved me some money for later on in my trip. The best part about staying at Cashew Hill was how safe and secure I felt. Being a solo traveler I didnt know what to expect. The cottage locked up tight, there was a safe in my room, and the entire Cashew Hill property was fenced off to prevent unwanted town folk from entering. There was always a member of staff ready and willing to help with whatever I needed. Needless to say feeling safe was never an issue for me.
If I had one regret this whole trip it would be that I did not spend more time at Cashew Hill. I have already booked my trip for next year and I am counting down the days until my next arrival. Keep up the good work guys and see you soon!!!!!!!

Possible but very unlikely you'd make the 10am bus. Generally allow about an hour until you've exited immigration, baggage and customs and then about 30 minutes to get from the airport to the Caribbean bus terminal by taxi. Then you have to go into the terminal and buy your ticket unless you've prepurchased it with the taxi/bus service. But you'll make the noon no problem.

The buses will be running normally on new year's day.
