Kind relates to,

Excellent taxi and bus information for Puerto Viejo. Thanks
Hi Kahlil, I'm curious about your summer trip and research into retiring in this area. Were there any aha moments that sealed the deal for you? I'm considering the same but have not made up my mind between Costa Rica and Panama. I'm taking a trip down in April 2020 to hopefully narrow the field. Would be interested in hearing about what you have learned.
Airport Express transfers are at the airport terminal, the other companies such as interbus are a 3 minute taxi ride away. All shuttles must be booked in advance. For the public bus, you would take a 30 minute taxi to bus station near downtown San Jose.
I am arriving Dec 27 st San Jose going to Puerto viejo. Is the shuttle at the airport or do I just grab a taxi to bus station? How much should I expect to pay for taxi? Do I book ahead for shuttle? Thank you.

From Limón Airport, the best place to get the public bus to Sixaola is from the MEPE bus terminal in downtown Limón. It MAY be possible to flag down a bus on the highway opposite the airport but we don't really recommend it. Take a taxi there or prebook a shuttle to Puerto Viejo or all the way to Sixaola or contact Caribe Shuttle and ask them if they'll pick you up at the Limón Airport for transport to Bocas. There's more info on transport from Limón airport on our flying page.
All the return schedules from Puerto Viejo to San Jose are also there just in their own section further down or go to them directly here. The last express bus from Sixaola to San José leaves at 3:00 pm so you'd have to arrive in Guaybito, Panama before 2:30pm at the latest but there are later buses from Sixaola to Puerto Viejo and onto Limón (where you could catch a connection to San José).
i want to travel from Bocas to San Jose with public express bus. What is the latest time to leave the island so i can catch the last bus on a saturday.
All schedules show SJ to PV but not PV to SJ.
I don't think there's really a safety concern either way. Some of the hotels around the airport include transport so that might be easier after a long day but then you'll just have to go back to the airport to get the car so I'd just get it right away. On the other hand if you were staying in central San José where I prefer rather than near the airport you could wait and not deal with traffic and directions in San José at night. Then it's easiest enough to pick up a car in San José the next day as all the major rental companies have offices in San José (mostly to the west of the city, near Parque Sabana). Also note that highway 32 to the Caribbean is close by downtown San Jose so it's actually easier/closer to the Caribbean coast from downtown.
We’re getting into San Jose around 8PM so we know that driving to PV is not recommended this late. We’ll stay the night in San Jose and then leave for PV in the morning (rental car). Would you recommend we rent the car the night we land and drive to our hotel near the airport or do you suggest we take a taxi to our hotel the night we land and rent the car the next day? Safety is our main concern and we’re not concerned with added expense.
¡Hola!
There may be a environment ministry office in Manzanillo but I'm not aware of any services they provide to tourists unfortunately, it's more of an office for enforcing regulations etc. I strongly recommend you get the services of a local guide to see the reserve. You'll see so much more and he will point out wildlife you'd have never have seen otherwise. There's some more info on our Manzanillo page and on our nature tours page.
Hi!We are going to Puerto Viejo in august with our family (2 adults and 2 kids). We want to go to Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife refuge. I've read that I can get information and maps about the park at the Office from the Ministry of Environment in Manzanillo. But I can't find an address of that office in Manzanillo. Does it still exist and what's the adress? Or, where can I get some information and maps?
With kind regards,
My name is Hershall a retired marine and I'm wheelchair bound. I'll be in Puerto Viejo 1July2019. Is there a power wheelchair store close that services and sells power wheelchairs?
All help is appreciated.
I'm 66 years old and currently in San Jose CR.

My life partner and I are educators, activists and TV series creators and writers. We had been visiting the Pacific side. Montezuma. Manuel Antonio. Since 1989. We finally took a trip to Puerto Viejo. Literally. 6 days there. Three months later. Like today. We just purchased land in Cocles. Right up the beach from Puerto. There simply was no doubt in our hearts that this stretch of beach towns was the Truth. This is HOME. We will begin Airbb hospitality. Tents. August 2019
You might want to pick which 2 of 3 of those requirements are most important to you! You can get cheap and clean but not party (many of the smaller places e.g. Ruka or Kalunai) or clean and party but not cheap (e.g. Selina) or cheap and party but maybe not so clean (e.g. Rocking Js)
Hi Ancel, Thank You for your interesting class when we were there in February. I still have tiny piece of amaranth/orange chocolate left. (My granddaughter likes it too; so need to make more! I really enjoyed the experience and knowing that there actually is such a thing as 'good' chocolate! Susan
600-700 colones sounds about right. I believe the prices are printed on the ticket the driver gives you. If not you'll have to ask at the MEPE office. Keep in perspective that 100 colones = 15 cents. Neither of those are major stops so the difference is probably which zone the driver is punching.
I can't find prices from Playa Chiquita to Punta Uva, or from Punta Uva to Playa Chiquita. The driver has charged us 3 different prices from Punta Uva back to Playa Chiquita. One day its 600 co lines another day its 700 colones, and I feel like we are getting robbed. I also wanted to know the price from Playa Chiquita to Puerto Viejo and back as well as from Playa Chiquita to Cahuita and back. I don't want to be charged more than I should be each time I take a bus. I can't find prices for these anywhere.
Hi! I am so sorry that prejudice still exists. If people could only see that it’s not the color of skin but who the person is. Opportunity or lack there of form who a person is. As a single white NY woman that regularly travels alone to beautiful, natural, vibrant, nearly 100% black Tobago West Indies in the southern Caribbean I wish people would open their minds and just get over it. TALK to the next person that you may feel prejudice against from your own sheltered background, hear who they are, see them as a person and GROW.

Puerto Viejo Satellite
I'm afraid car seats for taxis are not common in the developing world. I would suggest you bring your own. There are some places that rent bicycles with bike seats in Puerto Viejo so that could be an option getting around in the area plus the local buses..
FELICIDADES.

Hello, my husband and I and our three year old daughter, are traveling to Puerto Viejo next week. We were planning on renting a car but the price with the full coverage insurance is too expensive. We are now planning on getting the bus from San Jose to PV however we are now trying to figure out how it will work with taking a taxi to the bus station because we need a CAR SEAT for our daughter to ride in. Also when we are in PV, wondering if there are taxis we could call that would have a carseat for our daughter so we can get to nearby beaches? Please give advice on how families with young children typically handle transportation in the area and getting to and from San Jose airport to PV. Thank you!!!
My husband and I just returned from a 2 week trip honeymoon travelling round the Pacific coast, Monteverde, La Fortuna and finally Puerto Viejo. PV and Punta Uva was by far our favorite places. They are AMAZING. I agree, it is the closest you will get to paradise. I love the fact it is laid back, underdeveloped, friendly. Everyone in PV says hello to you on the street, and everyone is so happy. Well, wouldn't you be if you lived in paradise?! I cannot recommend it enough...as a couple, a solo traveler, or as a family. Hippy vibes and snobbishness aside; whatever background you come from, if you can appreciate living as close to nature as possible, then this is the place for you. Enjoy :)
In my experience there's a huge expat community, many of whom have been here for many many years. If you get involved in some of the local efforts you will no doubt find connections. CATCAS is the local business org.
Thanks for all the research that went into mak8bg this site SO informative!
I'm seriously considering moving from Kenya to the CR Caribbean side but my main concern is how much of a permanent expat community is there? Im here right now & feels very transient in terms of finding friends here.
Any comments would be extremely useful.
I have taken Ancels chocolate making class 3 times and also a chocolate “treatment” fun day with a group of women! The class has been just a little different every time I’ve taken it and I learn something new! It’s never ever boring and it really because Of Ancel that it is so much fun. She tells great stories and I learned all about the medicinal properties of the actual cacao which was an added bonus in addition to the chocolate making! It’s completely hands on at its best! Great for a group as I have done a couple of times or just a special
Someone that you want to share this delicious magical experience with! Did I mention the chocolate is some of the best I’ve ever had?! It truly is. It’s made with love!
I have taken two workshops with Ancel, chocolate making and natural beauty treatments and both were so much fun and so informative. Ancel is eager to share her extensive knowledge about the healing and beneficial properties of our local plants. We had delicious chocolates at the end of one session and glowing skin at the end of the other. I would highly recommend Ancel's workshops, they would be a great activity to add to a girls' trip or a bridal party. Also the perfect way to spend a rainy Puerto Viejo day.
There's no way to go directly from David to Puerto Viejo. If you wanted to visit Bocas del Toro as well you can book a shuttle from David to Bocas here and then another onto Puerto Viejo a day or two later. To go direct the most efficient and cost effective way is a local bus from David to Changuinola, then a taxi or local bus to the border town of Guaybito, then walk across the border to Sixaola then take the local bus to Puerto Viejo. It's not as complicated as it sounds, just check the border and bus schedules and leave early enough from David.
Hi, I'm having a hard time finding the answer to this online. We're planning a trip next year with our daughter who will be 8 years old. Do any of the bike rental placed have kid's sized bikes or tandem bikes that children can ride on the back of? She's a good biker but will need a smaller bike for sure. Thanks for your time.
I traveled back and forth from Puerto Viejo to Bocas del Toro last month with Gecko and it was perfect. Everything was taken care of and very little hassle for us. I also made a neat youtube of our experience, which will give you some insight into our trip.
Hi, Happy New Year you beauts! I will be arriving beginning Feb '19, first visit, for a month or two. Does anyone know of any volunteer positions available, horticulture, wildlife and pets, community, tourism... absolutely anything considered. I'm a mature woman Irish/Manx, beyond excited to be coming to this beautiful place.
