A Surfer's Paradise
Esa página está disponible también en español.
Cocles is the first community south of Puerto Viejo and it north of Playa Chiquita. It is one of the most well developed. The beautiful beach is very popular with surfers, especially at the northern end, and also for swimmers. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards via the community supported Guardavidas del Caribe Sur.
There's a big variety of businesses located at Cocles, including basic hostel type accommodation up to luxury hotels and rental homes. There are also many restaurants and services although it is just a few minutes by bicycle to Puerto Viejo should you need something more than is on offer here.

A group of 4 of us is headed down in February for 1 week and we're staying at Costa de Papito. Your thoughts or suggestions of things to do? Is it best to bring all cash or do travelers checks work the same?
Thanks!
November 30, 2009
Doug from Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Cash and an ATM card is the easiest; travelers checks are a total hassle, you'll spend a lot of time in a long bank line up. Check the money page for more details on this.
As far as stuff to do, well big question...there's so much to do here! Surfing, biking, hiking. Have you checked out the tours page? Whether you want to do organized activities like that or do it on your own that page will still give you a good idea of the stuff to do locally. You could also contact the folks over at Gecko Trail Adventures, they can give you good advice and organize any of it as well.

Cash is king! Put $ in your bank account and go get it out at the ATM. Much much faster that waiting in lines at the bank. If you bring alot of dollars , you will have to go into the bank with your passport and get colones and that takes time too.
)
To do....take a rafting trip from Exploradores from San Jose (your hotel) and they will drop you off in P.V. after the rafting for free. Rafting is the ultimate blast! They are a good company that takes good care of you! You could horseback ride....that is alot of fun and it will show you some of the pretty countryside and also the beaches too. Call Raul 8823-3659. He has good horses and is a English speaking local guy and will treat you right! Rent bikes and explore...watch your stuff on the beach. There are lots and lots of pretty different beaches to explore. Go to animal rescue center in Cocles and have baby monkeys crawl on you! Very cool and $ is for a very good cause! $10 . Sloth rescue is very cool too! They are the cutest!
Eat....Eat ...Eat! There are lots of places and most are great! Go see Tina at Jammin for great cheap Jerk chicken and all kinds of other great food , right on the beach in town. She just built a very cool second story to her place that has a nice view and breezes too!
Costa de Papito is a great place to stay. LOVED our cabana . We had our ipod and dock for the front porch to chill out too! We just stayed there a few months ago and Eddie and his staff will take good care of you. Bring a cooler for your cabinas , so you can keep snacks and cold beer and drinks in there. Coolers are expensive in C.R.
Have fun ....you will love the vibe of Puerto Viejo. If you ride bikes to town at night , bring lights . so people in cars can see you....it is very very dark on the road! Margo

Hi!! You've been to Cocles, and I plan going to! What are the nice places to stay for low cost? Thank you very much!
November 04, 2009
margo Wilkinson from austin and p.v.
Cocles is not the cheapest area to stay , but if you have friends with you , you could rent a house in Cocles. My friend Erick Palmer (506-8829-8216) has small rooms to rent out on his tropical property for good prices. Safe and secure with wifi too. 10 minute walk to beach , 4 or 5 minute bike ride to beach.
In Puerto Viejo , we stay at Cabinas Guarana for $ 30 or so and like it alot! Clean and spacious with your own porch to chill. Great owners too! Good luck...it is wonderful in Puerto Viejo!
