No need to spend the night in SJ for a 12:40pm arrival unless you want to. There's a shared shuttle, the Airport Express, that leaves the airport at 2:30pm. There are also public buses which leave at 4pm and 6pm from the Terminal Atlantido in downtown San Jose (allow at least an hour to get from the airport there). For those you might consider the taxi/bus service in which the taxi driver gets your bus ticket in advance and the picks you up at the airport for your bus. All three of those services can be booked right here at this link.

Hey, Im going to land at SJO at 12:40 pm, and from there will be trying to get to Cahuita. Was wondering if there is a direct bus I could take, or if its worth getting a personal driver, or staying the night in San Jose for a shuttle early.

It's nice to have a reservation but most of the time it isn't possible. Hard to predict the traffic on Christmas Eve. They do add extra buses when it's really busy so it's not generally a problem. You could go to the bus station earlier or the day before and get your ticket. Or you can purchase the taxi and bus service if you like here which is another option. In this case, the driver picks up your ticket in advance then picks you up at the airport or your hotel and delivers you to the bus station.

I've tried that number myself recently and no one picked up after many rings; I don't think it has changed but not entirely sure. Getting an answer out of MEPE isn't easy...If you find a different number let us know!

Hi Wayne, we're happy to have any and all local businesses listed! But the site requires a community effort, the options are so extensive! If the business hasn't submitted a listing for their place, feel free to add it on our new listing form or I'll add those two to my to-do list.

Hi,

as I would like to take the bus from San José to Puerto Viejo de la Talamanca on December 24th, 2017: Is it necessary to make reservations in advance due to the holidays? Or maybe go very early on the day I want to leave for Puerto Viejo?

Unfortunately, today (December 15th) I can't get a hold of anyone over the phone. Has the number changed?

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

We stayed in Playa Negra 8 days and Cocles 8 days. We didn't like the first place, but since it was so close to Banana Azul, we ate there a lot! They had the best service, great grounds and great food! We found several other nice dining places too.
We enjoyed the tiny Town, beaches and learning Spanish.
No one bothered us. Everyone is realtor and Tour Guide, ????????. We plan to return next year!!

I can't say this enough about the Caribbean: weather is unpredictable! There's very little defined season here for when it's raining unlike the Pacific. But I also can't say this enough: it rarely rains enough to ruin your day. Rain, when it comes, comes in short spurts and often overnight. You go on with your day and appreciate the break from the heat! As for mud, that's not a problem in coastal areas; that's a problem in the mountains so I'm not sure where you're hearing that but it's not accurate about Puerto Viejo or the other beach communities. In 25 years of going to Puerto Viejo many many times I've had 1 trip which had exception storms and the weather ruined it but that was a truly exceptional situation! Every other time was glorious and/or I found it too hot.

Hi, I'm not aware of any place that has carriers or trailers but they may exist. This same question was asked in 2014 but unfortunately no one answered it so please let us know if you do find out! The biggest bike rental place in town is Gallo; the phone we have for them is +506 8641-4314 so maybe you can ask them and please post a follow-up here if you get an answer.

The easiest snorkeling to get to in PV is at Punta Uva and the reef there protects the beach very well so it is very calm seas there year round. It's possible there will some reduction in visibility though. The snorkeling tours tend to go to the reef in Cahuita or other places by boat and they will be less protected in the case of rougher seas so if you do want to book one of them I'd recommend waiting to see what conditions are like and booking just a day or two ahead as conditions do vary often from day to day. And ask the operator at the time of course! They won't run the snorkel tours if conditions are bad anyway.

Unfortunately, no. Leaving your belongings out on the beach unattended is asking for them to be taken and encourages those types of petty thieves to hang around the beaches. Make a buddy on the beach and drop your bag with them while you're in the water. And either way, don't bring valuables to the beach.

Great article! I'm a single mum and my daughters (age 21 and 10)and I rented a car in San Jose and drove to Puerto Viejo. The roads were fantastic. We stayed in PV for 10 days before moving on to Manuel Antonio and Nicoya and I regret that we didn't stay longer. It was by far the most beautiful area with safe coves for my little one to swim compared to the punishing surf on the Pacific Side. Snorkeling was a favorite past time and you could even do it off the town beach, which is a testament to the strong eco-preservation movement prevalent in the entire country. I've never seen such clean beaches, and no garbage roadside either. There was animal life EVERYWHERE. Literally bands of monkeys and sloths hanging right outside your door. Animal rescue center was incredible. Next time we will do some tours. amaamamaa

The local transport page goes into detail on all your options.

First if you take the noon bus from San José this one goes down the coastal road to Manzanillo so will stop in Punta Uva (ask the driver). The other buses only go to downtown PV in which case you have the options of:
- taxi
- local buses
- rent a bike
Details are all on the local transport page.

Neither Puerto Viejo or Monteverde has an airport! Your easiest option would be to book a private van transport for your group. Alternatively you could book a shared shuttle to Arenal or to San Jose and then onto Puerto Viejo. Finally if you did want to fly you could fly to Limon from San Jose and then book transport to Puerto Viejo from there (about 45-60 min). All these options can be booked on these pages or you can contact our tour partner Gecko Trail and ask them to organize it for you.

The Puerto Viejo area is quite a bit bigger than Dominical and if you count the adjoining communities such down the coast such as Playa Cocles, Punta Uva and Manzanillo (and also Cahuita) you'll find a very large variety of activities, beaches and vibes. The size of the population is similar to Quepos/Manuel Antonio area but there's a wider variety of places and things to do.

Our snorkeling/hiking experience with Roberto was great! The weather was somewhat limiting with rain and choppy waters, but Ramon and Geraldo did their best to still give us a great experience. Ramon was able to guide us to see several fish, a shark, a stingray, a spider starfish, and sea cucumber. We were surprised how great a snorkeling experience it ended up being despite the weather. Then they served us delicious fresh papaya and pineapple on the shore before our hike.
Our hike through Cahuita National Park was a real treat! Our guide Geraldo was so knowledgeable and taught us how to really appreciate the jungle. We referred to his advice for the whole remainder of our trip as well. We saw monkeys, birds, lizards, spiders, a snake, several plants & flowers, and ate & drank from a coconut he cracked open. After our tour, he showed us a great place to eat lunch too and told us about his extensive studies in the plant life of Costa Rica. He was so intelligent and experienced- we were impressed and really enjoyed our time with him!
Overall, we had a great experience with Roberto Tours and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to observe and learn much about Costa Rica!

I stayed at the Sueno Grande in late December and I could not be more happy with my stay. It was very clean and nicely decorated. Jody was incredibly accommodating and the food served every day was excellent (she even sent me with a bag of food for the road on the day I was leaving which was a great surprise and treat). I was travelling alone so safety was very important to me and I felt very safe at the Sueno Grande. She also gave excellent recommendations on things to do in the area. It was close to the beach and within walking distance from town. I would stay again if I had the opportunity.

Sueño Grande is a wonderful new B&B in the idyllic setting of Puerto Viejo. The pool is the perfect respite and the ocean is a short walk away. There are a number of nearby restaurants and plenty to do within an easy bike ride. Jody has plenty of ideas for things to do and is helpful from the moment you get to the airport in San Jose. The rooms are spacious and as nice as anything you would find in the US or Europe and better than nearly anything else you will find in Costa Rica. If you like comfort along with hanging out at the beach, or adventures, Sueño Grande is the place for you.
