Wonderful place to stay!!

Cabinas Guarana is a wonderful place to stay. Nice, clean, spacious rooms, with comfortable beds, privacy, and even a comfortable hammock on your own private lanai. This place is quiet, and secure. We have stayed here on two consecutive visits over the past 10 months. The owner's (Paulo, and Giovana) are great people. Very friendly, and helpful. The staff are equally friendly, knowledgeable, and always happy to assist with reservations, recommendations, information, and even translation. Cabinas Guarana is a great value, and has become my home away from home in PV!

Thank you, Nina!

My friend and I had a little bit of a stutter getting down to Costa Rica, but Nina was there every step of the way and put together a wonderful vacation for us.

On our 2 nights in San Jose, we stayed with Kurt at Casa 69, and it was absolutely wonderful - a relaxing and comfortable oasis in the middle of the city. His hospitality is outstanding, and you cannot go wrong staying there. We cannot wait to see Kurt again on our next trip there.

While in Puerto Viejo, we were fortunate enough to stay at Casa Las Brisas with the wonderful Michel. Staying at Las Brisas was like spending the week with a good friend, comfortable and warm. We miss you, Michel!!

The tours we booked were: Rafting, Canopy/Zipline, and Snorkel and Hike in Cahuita Nat'l Park. On our free days, Nina helped us arrange trips to the BriBri Chocolate Lady and La Casa de Serpiente, where we held the most precious baby sloth!

My only regret is that we did not do the 2-day rafting trip; something we will correct next time.

I cannot say enough about Nina - She is so knowledgeable and knows exactly what will make your vacation to Costa Rica all it can be. We enjoyed working with her as well as being able to put a face to the name when we arrived. You made our trip so special and are a big part of why we felt so comfortable and fell in love with Costa Rica. Thank you for everything you did for and with us. We cannot wait to see you again next year!

surfing lessons

I just returned from a week in Puerto Viejo. As an "older" woman traveling alone, I had the best vacation I've ever had there. The highlight was taking surf lessons for the first time from Hershel Lewis at "caribbean surf school and tours" His cell phone: 8357-7703. Lonely Planet recommended him and they were absolutely right: He is an AWESOME teacher, really clear, careful, motivating and encouraging. He worked very hard to find the perfect waves and get me surfing and I loved it! He's also a singer with a wonderful reggae album.

I just spent a week at Hotel Pura Vida and had a wonderful time. I planned my trip at the last minute and the owners made everything easy for me. Not only were they the first place to respond to my request for lodging, they also recommended a wonderful but very economical place in San Jose. Hotel Pura Vida is beautifully landscaped and decorated. The rooms are very clean, airy, with balconies, screened windows, very nice bathrooms and hot water showers. The food they serve is simple and inexpensive but delicious. The hosts really went out of their way to be helpful and make everything go smoothly. I used the "Interbus" transport service to get there and they were excellent- on time, professional drivers and nice air-conditioned vans.

Fortunately Puerto Viejo/Gecko Trail Adventures and Banana Azul are not using Crocodive any longer. They are under investigation from the Costa Rica ICT (tourism board) and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) for an incident that occurred in March due to Crocodive's extreme negligence. If you are thinking of booking diving on your own use one of the other companies not Crocodive. Trust me! (And I don't work for the other companies, I was witness to the incident in March.)

For 5 people, the private van really is the hassle-free way to go. You'll spend more to rent a car for the week and then have the hassle and stress of directions. And Puerto Viejo is a place where a car isn't needed; you can cycle pretty much everywhere and most of the local tours and activities include pickup. So you're on the right track!

Great Service

A friend and I visited Costa Rica back in mid-March and we had an amazing time. Nina did an exceptional job at organizing and planning everything for us so we were able to just sit back and enjoy. She handled everything from room accomodations, transportation, and tours.

Our stays at Casa 69 and Las Brisas were OUTSTANDING! The hospitality we received from both Kurt and Michel were some of the best we've ever had. I would highly recommend both B&B's.

The tours we did were: Rafting, Canopy/Zipline, and Snorkel and Hike in Cahuita Nat'l Park. Nina also led us to the Chocolate Lady and La Casa de Serpiente. The Rafting was by far our favorite: exciting, thrilling, and the guides were wonderful, funny, and outgoing. The only downside was we wish we did the 2 day trip. Rafting is a must! The canopy tour was also a ton of fun and again the guides play a huge role in this. The views and adventure were breathtaking. The snorkel/hike was also nice but I definitely preferred the hike over the snorkel - the water is a bit silty. The Chocolate Lady (Petronila) was really interesting and it was so nice to learn about the BriBri history and get to taste some amazing chocolate. Finally La Casa de Serpiente was a ton of fun. Where else can you get up close and personal with monkeys, sloths, and ocelots. Being the animal lover I am I was in heaven.

Thank you Nina for helping to make this such a memorable trip. Your professionalism and guidance are truly appreciated. Nina is a wealth of knowledge and I have already been recommending her to family and friends back here in the states. When we return to Costa Rica we will definitely look to Nina to help us plan our adventures!

Tusen takk, Tesekkur ederiz and Merci!

We just returned from Costa Rica and I wanted to give you feedback and thank you for a good job. Tusen takk, Tesekkur ederiz and Merci! all of them for you Nina!
The country is very beautiful and we are hapy that we had the chance of checking out most of its beauties. People were kind and eager to communicate and understand the French words I used instead of Spanish! .. We did not have any problems of what so ever.. Connections and people who received us or gave us to the other tour operator was smooth/good.

Most liked:
1-Totugero and Evergreens' cabins and Jungle Tom as guide are top of the list
2-Fortuna, Arenal beautiful and relaxed atmosphere, nice small "city", a good serious young guy as our guide (don't know the name) He was very conscious about ecology and volcano & very knowledgable...
2 again-Banan Azul and Casa 69 and their owners, beautiful, beautiful places and geniously good people as their owners. Real gems.
3-Rafting team. Those boys, Exploradores were good organized, had humor and good skills. I was impressed how they dashed out lunch for 80 people in 15 minutes. Bravo!
4-Riding and hiking to waterfalls was a good day too. But riding guide (and a guide named Laura who did the first part of Tortugero) were hmmmmmmm.. a bit.... hmmm unmatured... yet... They need to develop in order to put the visitor to the first and not so self centered. Not bad at all but needs improvement.
5-Jacko Beach, touristy, nothing to write home about... But we had very good people at the Hotel Canciones del Mare which made the place loveable..
6-Casa Rio Blanco. I know that it was a last minute solution and we did not spend more time than sleeping there, people who own it were interesting to talk and nice to know but the cabin we stayed was a bit too rustic for me.

That's all I can come up right now Nina. We must thank you once more to arrange this for us.

With our best wishes
Banu G. Syvertsen and Roy Thorvaldsen

The only real down side of our whole trip was getting a bag stolen while riding bicycles to Manzanillo. But wanted warn people about that hill along the road where most people have to slow down and walk their bikes for a short distance. A man jumped from the bushes and then ran back into the woods.

The best beach for kids in the Puerto Viejo area is Punta Uva. Your children can swim there all year round without concern of riptides and dangerous currents. Punta Uva is a beautiful, serene beach which straddles a cliff that you can hike up to. At the top, you have a stunning panaromic view of the ocean. There's a good chance you will see a family of monkeys as you take the short climb up through the woods. Both sides of the cliff offer fantastic beach spots for families.

Since most hotels want their money up front when you check in, we pay with TCs if possible instead of carrying large amounts of cash, is worth paying the 2% extra for safety reasons.

Beaches for young kids

A lot of the beaches in the area have seasonal variations in how rough they are and whether there is an undertow so you definitely should ask locally before you go out. That said, Punta Uva beach and the beach in town (not towards Salsa Brava but closer to town) are generally safe for kids. Others may be to depending on the seasonal conditions. One of the great advantages of this area is that there are a wide variety of beaches, with different charicteristics (white sand, black sand, surfing, calm and reef protected, etc).

Beach swimming for young kids

My wife and I are looking for a cool place to take our two young kids (2 1/2 and 5) for their first major adventure. From what I have read, PV looks like the place we are looking for. I only have one concern, I have read in some places that the currents (undertow) and reefs can make swimming challenging in some areas. Obviously at that age the kids are not the best swimmers but I just want to make sure they will be able to do their limited thing at the beach (as that is one of the primary goals being in a landlocked area). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Solo Traveler from Bocas

Hi Maria --

Sure, it is safe. We get solo travelers on this route often.

I'd recommend you book the shuttle though -- it is way less complicated, faster, and for $34 each way is only a few more bucks than individually booking the boat, the taxi to the border and the bus from the border.

You can book that here. Then just select Bocas as your departure city.

There are a ton of places to stay -- although AC is not nearly as common in Puerto Viejo as Bocas, not really needed, especially if you're near the beach with a breeze. Check out the accomodations page.

Write our tour partner at info@geckotrail.com if you need any help booking the transport or want to book any activities while you're here.

Cheers, Doug.

Pachamama was our first and only destination on the Caribbean...in high season around the hoidays. We were greeted by our gracious host, Bill and a group of white faced monkeys (apparently a rare sighting this time of year!). Definitely take advantage of the food at Pachamama...served right to your bungalow; very inexpensive and much tastier than the meals we had at the area restaurants. We really appreciated having the bikes and kayaks...the beach is so beautiful; lying under the palms when the sun gets a little too hot. The bungalow was a great respite from the beach...really in the jungle (it poured rain most nights). Very rustic, yet you have everything you need. No reason to go to Puerto Viego...grocery, cafe's, beach all a walk or bike ride away. Bill was so accommodating. A very safe haven in a beautiful setting.
