I spent a week here with 3 friends and it was incredible. Hakan and his wife Fatima are very friendly and helpful. They give lots of local advice and offer help. The area is beautiful and secure with a locked gate and security cameras, although I never felt unsafe in the area. We stayed in the larger apartment which you see to the right in the picture. It was perfect for us and one room even has A/C. There is a full sized fridge and a cooking stove so we were able to eat in and save money which we loved, especially for breakfast. There are lots of birds and other wild life in the area to enjoy. The beach and Jaguar Rescue are within walking distance and everything else within biking distance. Hakan was kind enough to have bikes ready for us from Monkey Bike Rental when we arrived. I can't wait to return one day!

Well the bus schedule between PV and Hone Creek is actually very frequent, much more so than the buses which go south of town. All the buses going to Limon or BriBri will stop there. See the local transport page for schedules.

And then there are bike and scooter rentals.

Hi,
I am staying about 3.5 km North of puerto Viejo de Limon from May 1-8 2016. It seems like there are no cars available to rent at this time.
Any suggestions of an economical way to transport groceries, etc from PV town that distance.? ....are there any private cars for sharing, or would I have to cab it all the time?
Thanks..don't want to be " up the creek"!!,

I was very fortunate to stay at this charming B&B this spring. The owner is from the states and speaks English which was a plus for me who barely can say hello in Spanish. Jody was great and the food was wonderful not only at the B&B but at the local Restaurants. The locals are so nice and most speak English which was a plus for me. I would highly recommend Sueño Grande. The rooms are lovely with soft linens and all the comforts of home. Jody has thought of everything you do not even have to bring shampoo. It was just so relaxing with the beach two blocks away and plenty of activities whatever your
idea of vacationing is. I will be back! Suzy

very real, authentic culture. She the owner is very sweet and caring.
All food is from the finest ingredients and very tasty. The fried whole fish has a hard and very crispy cook on it. Honestly, I've never tasted a better cook on anything. Soooo crusty, to die for. The only thing they could improve on is the hot sauce, quiet thin. over all, they have to be in the top 1%.

My four girlfriends and I just had a week long stay in Puerto Viejo. We stayed in the area of Cocoles in Flor Del Caribe. Hakan and his wife Fatima were amazing hosts. They were very helpful, friendly, and accomadating. The house and site was beautiful. It was a perfect location just outside of town. It was within biking distance to Many nearby towns and walking distance to many lovely beaches. Our hosts also had a wonderful little buy who was full of spunk and the best little house cat anyone could ask for (Max). All in all it was a wonderful house, family, and experience and we would definitely stay there again.

My friends and I had just recently visited Puerto Viejo. It was a wonderful vacation. I had been reading lots or reviews and had been doing lots of research and I found lots of mentions of alice's ice cream shop. Well it was definitely amazing and a must if you are going to be in the area of chaquita. We loved it so much we went back a second time. And trust me after a long bike ride on a hot humid day, ice cream sounds like the best idea in the world!

It doesn't make any sense to fly to Changuinola really; you wouldn't really save any time over taking the boat and van shuttle which you can book on this page. If you really wanted to fly with a group of 8 you could charter a plane probably as well to Changuinola or Limon but I still don't see the point of this as the entire water and overland route takes about 4 hours door to door.

Great info !

Question: My group of 8 plan to spend 2 days in Panama City and then fly from PC to Bocas Del Toro for 2-3 days, and hopefully fly from Bocas Del Toro to Changuinola PA and onto Puerto Viejo CR.

Do you know of any airlines that fly from Bocas to Changuinola ? Or will we be forced to fly from Bocas to Albrook to Changuinola?

I just had my camera stolen from right next to me while I was sitting on a tree stump on Playa Cocles watching the ocean. Keep your things in sight or attached to you. It was either someone with some serious Ninja skills or 2
Americans with smooth moves. Two late 20s 'white guys walked past me. One on the beach in front of me and said I had a perfect spot, the other behind me was. laughing at him as he stumbled in a wave. So sad to lose my photos and be out a decent camera. Been to the area 2 other times with no problems.

Schedule is the same 7 days a week, the only changes are on major holidays when there may be somewhat reduced service. Yes, there is some luggage restriction but I'm not aware of the specifics, you may need to negotiate with the driver if you have a surfboard or something. The shuttles like Interbus generally charge $10 for large items like that but I'm not aware of any specific policy for the public bus. Unlikely the bus will be sold lot in June i'd say but hard to judge. Sometimes they'll put on an extra bus if there are enough extra people anyway (or sometimes offer to let you stand for 4.6 hours, ugh).

I expect you will need to go to the Panamanian consulate in San Jose and get a visa before traveling. Please see the Panama Visas page which indicates citizens of India will need a visa before entry to Panama. But perhaps your Costa Rica residency document would give you an exception to this but you should ask this question to the Panama consulate so you are sure what will happen when you get to the border.

Hi Martina, I've heard that the Panamanian officials have changed their policy and are now asking for proof of a flight ticket leaving Central America rather than proof of a ticket leaving Panama. However, as always, this is not applied to everyone, so if you "look respectable" you may not be targeted for this rule. I was going to update this page but the official documentation from the Panamanian Consulate website to the US still says "Tourists must present a return trip ticket or fare back to their home country or next destination upon arrival" so I'm really not sure what to say. The best advice is to make sure you have all your documentation handy when requested and be clear that you have a planned exit date and you'll be fine.

As far as your destination hotel for the shuttle that's no worry, you can let them know later.

Hi there, thanks for all the information, very helpful! A few questions though:
1. Will a shuttle (bus/boat) ticket from Bocas to Viejo be enough to get me into Panama in the first place (from Colombia), will it be accepted as an exit-ticket?
2. I have no ticket to my homecountry to show when entering Costa Rica, will they accept a planeticket from Costa Rica to Nicaragua as well?
3. I don't know yet where I'll stay in both Bocas and Viejo, is that a problem or can I inform the shuttle agency later on?
Thanks again!! Cheers, Martina

Top Notch Service

My family and I just returned from Costa Rica, and we chose Gecko Trail Adventures to assist us with our transport to and from San Jose Airport (to Punta Uva). We were traveling with a toddler, so it's no easy feat! ;) Gaelle, Lorena, and others at Gecko Trail provided TOP NOTCH service and were so incredibly helpful from the moment I contacted them. They seemed to be available ALL the time and responded to my inquiries so incredibly quickly -always answering the question I had. I can't say enough good things about this company - I would use them again and again and again. And my husband and I will be recommending this company to all of our friends who plan on traveling to Costa Rica. You all provided THE BEST costumer service I have ever have - across the board. THANK YOU!

There will be buses running January 1, the bus companies are required by their license to run them. However there may be a limited schedule. Whether you take a shuttle or a bus you'll end up changing in San Jose but with the public bus you'll need to also change bus terminals in San Jose so figure in a few bucks for a taxi into the calculation. But yes, the bus will still be substantially cheaper.

Will buses be running on January 1? Trying to get from Puerto Viejo to Quepos. we would have to stop in San Jose to switch buses but it seems like a much cheaper option than interbus or another shared shuttle. What is the best and cheapest way to get from one side to the other?

I do not recommend this place at all. A group of 4 of us arrived at 10pm in Cahuita because there was terrible traffic. Because we had seen the place online before, we went straight there. We asked the lady to show us the room for 4 people and asked her how much it would be for 2 nights. After going in the house to ask an older lady how much the room was (even though she is the one who runs the hostel), she said, “$32 dollars for 2 nights”. We said this is really a bargain it’s only $8 dollars per person and discussed the price in front of her and decided to stay. On our last day, we asked if we can pay to stay until 4pm because we had bus tickets for that time and she said it was no problem. When we were leaving, we asked for the lady and a man there said she had left and that she said we had to pay $68 dollars. We said that is not what we had agreed on, and the man started saying, "I have no reason to steal from you." We asked him to call the lady and clear up the price. When he called her, he spoke to her in Creole saying that we didn't want to pay for the room and that we wanted to steal from them. He passed the phone to me saying that she wanted to talk to me, and she started screaming at me on the phone saying that “you people always do this, don’t make me go there with the police”. I told her that this was my first time there and that whatever other people had done in the past has nothing to do with me, all I wanted was to sort out the situation. She kept on screaming and saying that her conscience was clean and that we were trying to steal from her. Then, she said you need to pay me $86. I told her, you told us $32, the man you left to charge us just said $68, and now you’re saying $86. She said that we had originally told her 1 night, and then the second day told her another night, and then we wanted to stay even more time, when we only talked to her the first night and then the last morning to extend the stay a few hours.

To avoid any other problems (and because we were almost going to miss our bus) we paid $86 for a small room with 4 beds and a very small bathroom for 2 nights and 4 additional hours. They did not even offer a receipt or any proof of purchase making it seem even sketchier.

I don’t think they are bad people, but they definitely need to learn how to run a business. I would like to think that there was a misunderstanding and that we just didn’t communicate well. But I’m completely bilingual in English and Spanish, so there is no real room for misinterpreting any of the conversations. This, unfortunately, was the last interaction we had in Cahuita before leaving, obviously leaving a sour taste in my mouth.

If there is room anywhere else, I would recommend not staying here.
I get this is a family business and that in the Caribbean things are more relaxed and less formal. But when it comes down to business, you need to be professional. The way this lady was with us is anything but professional. If you are thinking of staying there, double check everything and get things in writing from this woman, or she just might “forget” about what she talked about with you before and threaten to bring the police.

We booked our honeymoon through Gecko Trail Costa Rica. We started off with their recommendation of Pacuare Lodge which was amazing and ended it with a great stay at The Springs Resort in Arenal.
100 x 100 Recomendable

The Pacific has clearly defined rainy and dry seasons, the Caribbean not so much. Generally it rains for a bit then it stops and your go on with your day. As you can see from the rainfall charts above January is NOT one of the rainiest months historically so whoever told you that is misinformed. January however is generally one of the driest months on the Pacific so perhaps by comparison.

I have just read that this is the rain season in Puerto Viejo and that its constant rain? is that correct as I am concerned that we will be washed out by rain? Puerto Viejo looks wonderful, but I'm not sure if it is a safe place for young children.
