Traumhafter Urlaub

Fabulous Trip to Costa Rica

Spent 10 glorious and fun filled days in Costa Rica with peace of mind thanks to Gecko Trail. Throughout the planning process I had MANY questions about things to do, where to stay, difficulty of activity, and all the way to what kind of power outlet we would find in Costa Rica. The staff at Gecko Trail were informative and ever patient including sending a picture of an outlet for my peace of mind. They even arranged travel for us on one leg of our trip that they had nothing to do with. Everything they booked went smoothly from drivers to accomodations to outings. Since I am not a seasoned travelor I relied heavily on them for advice and they came through in every way. Thank you Gecko Trail Adventure! Pura Vida!

Magic Moon Rocks!

We stayed Aug 10-13th at the Magic Moon House! The property was very nice, we utilized both levels (2 bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs). The layout of the house was great, a nice open kitchen, the outdoor space on the 2nd level is wonderful, my brother and cousins used the hammocks to relax a lot and you can see the ocean right in front of you. The rooms are very spacious and we appreciated the way the house was functional for us. The house grounds are really nice, it's like you're in your own oasis. We opened up the house doors and windows as much as possible....we even noticed a horse farm behind one of the bedroom windows that had live cattle, kind of cool for all the cows to do an about face and stare at us. The house does not have have AC, it has fans throughout the house but, honestly we were on the beach so, we felt the breeze...no need for AC. I will tell you that you will need bug spray and ant spray....the caribbean side is the natural side of costa rica so, you're living the simple life.

We basically had our own private beach and we had a rental jeep so, we drove down to punta uva and manzanillo. Johnnys and Mangos are the best bars in Puerto Viejo. For food, we liked Mare Nostrum, Lydia's Place and Koki Beach. A lot of people recommended Tamares, do not order the chicken sandwich or burgers, definitely not a fan. Kind of dumb of us to order that anyway...fish with rice and beans is the way to go, costa rica does not really have a specialized cuisine. We went to the supermarket and bought food since the house came with a fridge, oven/stove and microwave. The rocky road leading to Magic Moon and Banana Azul is a bit rough, we were definitely isolated from the center town of puerto viejo but, it's only a 5 mins drive or 10 mins walk on the beach. If I come back to Puerto Veijo, you better believe I'm staying at Magic Moon again....we were really not impressed with any of the other hotels we saw in town and on the beach, most of them are rundown or just plain jane.

Also, if you want to do ziplining, jungle tours, white water rafting, snorkeling or scuba diving, the Banana Azul hotel, where we had to pick up the house key, is a few doors down and offers Gecko Trail Adventures, great times! The best in costa rica hands down. Aaron and Pablo our guides were great. Ashton who arranged everything is very cool. Best time to go to Costa Rica is nov - feb and with that said, it was 80 degrees in august! We would have loved to have more sun but, we ovbiously understood we were in their winter season....there were still a lot of people at the bars though, especially after midnight....late crowds. Go to Mangos first or another bar on the small main road then venture off to Johnnys on the water, you're sure to have a good time. Also, for those who are interested, follow the smell of ganj, it's openly smoked outside by the locals, especially at the bars....the cops don't really hound folks, when locals see cops coming they just put their joints behind their backs until the cops roll past....so seamless. Our time at Magic Moon was very laidback and relaxing, we went to the Pacific coast afterwards, Jaco and Manuel Antonio and we preferred the Caribbean side the best even though they were not as advanced as the Pacific side. I believe the Caribbean side got electricity in 1986.

We didn't get a chance to see Samara, Mal Pais or Montezuma on the west pacific coast, must go by ferry from puntareanas which is 30mins from Jaco ....but, maybe next time. But, with that said, If I were you, I would check out both coasts...Jaco is packed in January (probably a good home base) which from a tourist perspective might work out better but, the Caribbean vibe had us wanting to go back to Puerto Viejo even when we were in Jaco. Puerto Viejo is about a 4 hour drive...if you don't get lost from San Jose. Jaco is about an hour half from San Jose so, plan accordingly. The rental car from Natcar.com helped us a lot to explore the country. Stay at least 3-4 days in Puerto Viejo and 3-4 days in Jaco to truly experience the fun. If you don't have a car....it won't be the same experience to get up and go see and do whatever you want. Stay at Magic Moon in Puerto Veijo and any Daystar property in Jaco. Have fun!

The best restaurant of our 2 week trip of Costa Rica. A friendly staff, GREAT fresh plates of food, COLD beer, and a furry canine host made for a good experience. A perfect vacation!

Our stay at Samasati was absolutley wonderful. They very graciously upgraded us to a bungalow. It was heaven. I can't imagine a more wonderful place to wake up with the sounds of the rainforest, the birds and even the loud monkeys. We had glorious weather, we were really lucky. It was slow while we were there and for a couple of days we were almost the only guests...we LOVED it!!! The food was delicious...we still drool over it when we talk about it....can't wait to buy the cook book if it ever comes out. Maren, our yoga instructor was fabulous, she was so soothing and yet challenging at the same time. We had a ton of fun on the canopy tour and the horseback riding was the best I'd ever been on. Galloping down a secluded beach and into the forest....amazing! The staff were so friendly and nice, we loved the girls at the front desk, and the men who drove us up and down the hill every day couldn't have been sweeter. We have been raving about this holiday to everyone we meet and hope someday to come back. Samasati is indeed a gem in the world.

An Oasis!

Both my husband and I cannot thank Jimmy and Debbie enough for our wonderful stay at Mother Dear. It was just what the doctor ordered! We were able to truly relax and unwind during our week-long vacation. Jimmy and Debbie were the perfect hosts: helpful, kind and a wealth of information. They are just as involved as you want them/ or not want them to be. The cottage is absolutely spotless and a true oasis. Every night, we would go to sleep with the sound of crashing waves and wake up in the morning to the same sound. We ended up cooking at Mother Dear more often than we anticipated because we simply enjoyed the cottage and environment so much. It is, without a doubt, the best place to stay in the Puerto Viejo area. If you're looking to go to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, this is the place to stay and unwind. Wonderful!

Crazy, Awesome Honeymoon puts all other vacations in 2nd place!

My new wife and I are generally laid back, kindergarten teachers from Tennessee. We enjoy our quiet time together at home and the company of friends and family when we do go out. That being said, taking our honeymoon to Mother Dear seemed like a perfect fit for our taste and it was. The beautifully constructed cabins are private and equipped with all the comforts one might need for an extended stay on the beach or a weekend getaway. We arrived and were instantly blown away by the hospitality of Debbie and Jim and the craftsmanship of the cabins. Upon arrival, they give you the grand tour of the gorgeous property and present you with the keys to the castle. They will also be there for you the rest of your trip to recommend adventures, local hot spots/restaurants, and arrange taxi services. While the tranquility of Mother Dear is certainly an endearing quality, Costa Rica has a wild side too! My wife and I could not ignore the excitement of rafting, hiking beautiful beaches, visiting the wildlife refuge, snorkeling and ziplining through the jungle. We became adventure travelers in one week. Most of the tour companies will pick you up or drop you off at the gates of Mother Dear. We loved the ease of creating daily adventures and returning to such a magical spot when our day was done. When we weren't adventuring, lounging around Mother Dear, or swimming in the ocean, it is only a 15 minute walk on the beach to the town of Puerto Viejo. We made this trip often, rain or shine. The town is full of restaurants, shops, and great people watching. The food was amazing! Casado from Lidia's was delicious and authentic Caribbean fare. Overall, it was a honeymoon everyone else should be jealous of! If you are considering traveling to Costa Rica, I highly recommend Mother Dear. Once you've been, you will not want to be anywhere else. Mother Dear is truly a magical vacation destination.

Slice of Paradise with Adventure, Comfort and Care on the Side!

I chose to stay at "Mother Dear" because my mother and I were taking a 'mother-daughter' trip to Costa Rica and I found it fitting. It was my mom's first time out of the United States and I wanted to go to a place away from so much tourism. Mother Dear was a perfect place to relax after a day of adventuring. We awoke to the waves crashing on the shore then walked the beach into the center and enjoyed market day where we ran into Debbie and she showed us how to pick out the sweetest pineapple. Debbie and Jim are so nice and became part of our adventures because when we would return from horseback riding on the beach and through the rain forest, or swimming, biking all over the map of Puerto Viejo, or snorkeling, they were interested in our day, and we had someone with whom to share our adventures. We also got to learn a local perspective of living in Paradise! We enjoyed the hammocks, kitchen, porch, and the amazing view of the Caribbean, the beautiful shower (hot and good pressure!) and especially the comfortable bed! Mother Dear was our favorite place we stayed in Costa Rica (and we stayed in very nice places) because it had a simple, elegant charm that calls you back. We will be going back!

Comment on Puerto Viejo Transportation

What are people saying about us?

Doug Dosdall from Puerto Viejo

The whitewater rafting trips drop in Puerto Viejo about 6pm. It's not really transport "by the river" but a great trip which is on the way and because they will pickup in the central valley and dropoff in the Caribbean you basically get your transport for free and of course spend a day in an enjoyable activity instead of just on the road. Full info on the trip is available here.

Pick ups in San Jose are about 6:30a.m. so you'd have to check whether they do pickup in Heredia or whether you'd have to get to a San Jose location for pickup that morning. You can ask Gecko Trail Adventures who book these trips that question by just adding that to the comments on your reservation request.

What are people saying about us?

Doug Dosdall from Vancouver

Oh, there is one fairly big gotcha I just recalled if you're trying to go from one flight to the other. As far as I recall the flights from Panama City to Changuinola leave from the domestic airport in Panama and not the main international airport. They are a long way apart. So keep that in mind.

Comment on Transportation between Bocas del Toro and Puerto Viejo

What are people saying about us?

Doug Dosdall from Puerto Viejo

Nope, you're not missing anything although it's not a route done much. Flight from Panama City to Changuinola then from Changuinola to the border it's a 20 minute taxi ride. Then walk over the border and you can grab a bus or taxi from there (negotiate first but last time I tried to do this it was at least $50). If you're heading south of PV (e.g. to Punta Uva, Manzanillo, Chiquita) you don't even need to head around into PV you can just get a taxi over the hill (get a 4WD taxi) direct to the beach road. The only other thing to keep in mind is that the border is only open business hours.

Doug -

Oh, yeah... there are flights from Panama City to Changuinola, aren't there? Now to someone like me who hates to drive and doesn't mind hanging out in airports, that seems to me even better and overall a pretty good routing. Too bad you can't walk across the border in Changuinola - guess it's another 5 miles to the north.

However, if you were returning from the US and had a car waiting in Changuinola (and again would rather sit on a plane than drive for 4-5 hours), that seems like a good way to go. About an hour flight to Changuinola, 10 minute drive to Sixaola, cross the border, then less than an hour's drive up to Puerto Viejo. Am I missing something? I'm new here.

Comment on Transportation between Bocas del Toro and Puerto Viejo

What are people saying about us?

Doug Dosdall from Puerto Viejo

Flying into Bocas is a great strategy IF you want to see Bocas too. But if you're only coming to Puerto Viejo then you'll end up spending a similar amount of time getting from Bocas to Puerto Viejo as San Jose to Puerto Viejo. Both run 4 hours or so (San Jose to PV may stretch to 5 or sometimes 6 if the main road is closed but normally it's about 4.5 hours). Bocas is closer of course but you have to deal with three different modes of transport (boat, Panama shuttle and Costa Rica shuttle) plus the border formalities so it ends up taking almost as long. If you're comparing shuttle times from Bocas on the transport planner then remember to add 1 hour for the time change from Panama timezone.

Two Panama domestic airlines also fly into Changuinola airport (which is on the mainland enroute from Bocas to the border) so that's even closer but the extra hassle may not be worth it.

Puerto Viejo from US via Bocas?

Given that it is difficult or impossible to fly to Limon, is it a realistic strategy to travel internationally (say, from the US) to Puerto Viejo by way of Bocas del Toro? It seems that you could fly to Isla Colon via either San Jose or Panama City and then take a water taxi + car/bus/whatever, thereby avoiding the long drive from San Jose. Does anyone do this?

A real diamond in the rough: Caribe Horse Riding Club

I have ridden horses my entire life and my ride with Vanessa down the Playa Negra into town (a year and half ago) remains one of the most memorable. I was instantly impressed with Vanessa's hard work in making her Caribe ranch a safe, responsible horseback riding facility. Unlike so many(in Latin America in particular,) her horses are extremely well cared for and well-trained, with excellent riding equipment. She spares no expense and so I had no qualms agreeing to a ride-- what a value! I was welcomed by her staff and her lovely children. It was just she and I for the ride and we had the luxury of an blissful gallop up the beach that I will never forget. We had some refreshing fruit in town before returning to the ranch as the sun began to set. Vanessa, I can see all the hard work you've put into this dream and I am very grateful for your service. It is a travelling horseperson's dream!

The house is great -- lots of space, storage, fully equipped with linens, towels, beach towels, kitchen has everything -- and the private property is very lush! We had a great time cooking breakfast and dinner every day there, and hanging out on the front porch relaxing in the hammock. A great gem ~ would highly recommend staying here as it's safe, convenient to town, but secluded enough and very private! The managers and cleaning staff were friendly and very helpful if we needed anything too. Overall, great time and would come again!

Hi Gecko Trail!
Just wanted to give a huge thank you to Yetty for planning a WONDERFUL vacation for us the week of April 16th-23rd. We had an amazing time with a week full of once in a lifetime adventures! Everything went smoothly and we had amazing resorts, excursions, drivers and guides! I couldn't even pick what would have been my favorite from Sky Trek zipline, Exploradores overnight rafting and from volcano to ocean views. It was all magnificent!

Gecko Trail Adventures, and Maythe in particular, put together a Costa Rican honeymoon for us that met or surpassed all our expectations ... one of our best trips ever! Highlights included the Monteverde area cloud forests, zip-lining, waterfall walks/swims and of course the three-day Pacuare River rafting adventure (honeymoon package). Everything went super smoothly, hotels were gay-friendly and Maythe was very helpful and pleasant to deal with, despite our hundreds of questions. We highly recommend Gecko for anyone else heading to Costa Rica!

We had a lovely week at Casa Tres Monos. The gardens are amazing! We saw monkeys almost every day and all sorts of wildlife wonders just by sitting on the back porch. It is a truly incredible spot, we really felt like we were in the jungle. In the evening we heard the most amazing chorus of sounds. It’s a spectacular place.

Our stay at Finca Chica

Our family stayed at Finca Chica last year and loved it. The grounds are like a botanical garden. The bungalows are very unique, beautiful, clean and well maintained. They are scattered around the grounds making one feel like they are alone in paradise. The proprietors are very friendly and helpful. We had a vehicle for part of our stay but a car isn't really necessary. Most of the time we rented bicycles for getting to beaches, town, etc.. Stores, beach and restaurants within walking distance.
We'll be back. Thanks again.

I stand corrected.. Costa Rica the COUNTRY - Not Island... PV has such an Island vibe, I guess I was in that state of mind while writing my review.. Will be heading back to PV this year for another month and will be staying at Jacarada again!.. Can't wait!.

Liebe Anja,
Also - ich hatte vier perfekte Tage, GANZ VIELEN DANK!! Du wirst bestimmt nochmal von mir hören...ich will diese perfekten Tage wiederholen! ;)

Comment on Mother Dear

Relaxing, Beautiful and Romantic

My husband and I just spent a thoroughly beautiful and transforming week at Mother Dear cottages. As I am a bit (okay, highly) particular about my lodgings, and quick to be disappointed, we selected Mother Dear after spending days and days online researching and even touring several places in the area upon arrival. We were thoroughly delighted with our choice. Mother Dear's location is excellent. It is oceanfront, so you are lulled to sleep by the sound of crashing waves, and you awake to the sound of crashing waves. And not only is it right on the beach, but unlike most of the other oceanfront options we saw while walking the beach from Manzanillo to Puerto Viejo, Mother Dear has a nice, perfectly empty stretch of beach in front of it. The cottages themselves are a perfect compliment to the bountiful, tropical flower gardens in which they are situated. They are crafted from a very fine quality almond wood. The design is simple yet elegant which allows one to commune with nature while feeling protected and pampered. The ocean-view balconies are so nice that it is a challenge to leave them for the beach or the town a few minutes down the road. We spent hours on them watching the waves crash against the shore, feeling the salt breeze against our skin and feeding the occasional wild horse which would meander onto the grounds. Privacy was a concern for us when planning the trip and I am happy to report that we felt as though we were the only guests. Also, I am normally not a people person, especially while on vacation, but Jim and Debbie were really very pleasant. They were also very very helpful. They gave us day trip ideas, connected us with guides, and made arrangements for one of the best massages ever. In closing, I would not hesitate to recommend Mother Dear. We will definitely be returning next year. As they are new, they are currently one of Puerto Viejo's best kept secrets.

Did the guides that were with you see these guys faces at all? I hope they can recognize them again, because this type of robbery has got to stop!

I hope they get what they deserve from karma!

Crime outside Puerto Viejo

Just wanted to pass on that my 14-year old daughter and I were bicycling with our two (female) tour guides from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo in early April when two men with shirts/scarves wrapped around their heads jumped out of the bushes waving machetes and took all of our belongings - backpack with my purse, cameras, even our two bikes. No one was hurt and it was over in about 15 seconds, but I was shocked that something like that could have happened. As we stood by the side of the road, many people cycled past us - didn't seem a particularly dangerous place but the circumstances were apparently right for a robbery. We were obviously at the wrong place at the wrong time, but just beware!
