The public bus and Interbus don't allow pets generally. But some of the other shuttle companies do as generally do the private services. What you should do is simply contact Gecko Trail Adventures with the details of your pet or pets (size, whether they'll be traveling in a cage, etc) and dates and they'll tell you the options that they have which will work with you pet. They book almost all the shuttle and private transport companies. Easy Ride (who's schedules are above and who Gecko doesn't book at this time) will also take pets but "your pet must travel in its cage".

In january 2013, we stayed for 2 weeks in Casa Renada. The wonderful garden with its exotical plants and animals was an extraordinary experience for us. The very comfortable cabin with its unique bathroom was the perfect home for our holdidays. We enjoyed also the big pool and the rich breakfast buffet. Cabins, pool and garden are perfectly cleaned every day.

Our family travelled to Costa Rica over the holidays, Dec 26th - Jan 3rd. Best family trip ever!!! Gecko Trail Adventures arranged the entire trip for us, which consisted of a Coast to Coast Adventure Tour. The hotels were excellent, and the activities were great. We especially enjoyed the whitewater rafting and ziplining. We were very impressed with how well organized everything was. For each hotel, tour, etc our drivers were always on time. There were no glitches at all. We loved the entire trip and would definitely use Gecko Trail Adventures again!!! With them handling all of the details we had nothing to do but show up and enjoy ourselves. Thanks so much!!!

No need for an SUV getting from San Jose to Puerto Viejo but there are some local roads for which it might be helpful if you want to get off the beaten track or you have a house rental off the main road. Check the local driving conditions section on the getting around locally page for more info. Other than that, when renting a car just make sure to figure out the final price with insurance. Insurance is mandatory in Costa Rica so if you already have insurance from your home country or credit card you will need to provide proof or buy the rental agencies coverage which can be as much as or more than the daily rate.

Well the only flights to Limon are charter flights where you charter the whole plane so that will cost you quite a bit more than hiring a private shuttle to Puerto Viejo. There is one rental car company in the PV area (in Hone Creek) and another that will deliver cars to PV from their Limon office so both those are options if you want a car down here. If you want a car while you're in the area, it might be just as easy to get it in San Jose, you'll get better prices and more selection. But don't drive after dark from SJ to PV. Or just live the Caribe lifestyle and get bikes while you're here instead.

I also understand that there is atleast one rental car company in Puerto viejo. Would we be better flying to Limon from SJO and taking a shuttle or renting a car in Limon or do you think it would be easier to hire a private driver? Thanks

Shipping stuff to Costa Rica from outside tends to be a nightmare and very expensive -- even small stuff. Any item which doesn't accompany you will enter the bureaucratic jungle that is Costa Rica customs and import duties could be exhorbitant (they'd probably want you to pay the duty and try and claim it back on re-export which would double the bureaucratic hassles). That's why people are always asking for stuff to be brought down by people coming down. So if your airline won't take them I'd say you're out of luck (people travel with surfboards on the airlines all the time, but don't know about these boards). The good news is that there is a SUP operator now in Puerto Viejo so you could go with them or contact them and see if they'll rent boards. Alternatively, you can ask them how they got their boards down.

We have 2 stand up paddleboards we want to get from Tampa, FL to Costa Rica. Any suggestions? They are about 10' (3.5M) long, most airlines small print says they won't take them and most shipping companies won't either. If we can GET them to Costa Rica it won't be an issue getting them to Puerto Viejo, got that part figured out. Seems like for such an awesome surfing country this would be a no brainer, instead it's killing us!

Thanks for the comments on the site; I appreciate it!

The return bus schedules from Puerto Viejo to San Jose are above as well; it's the table on the right side of the page with the buses starting in either Sixaola or Manzanillo and continuing to Puerto Viejo. There are 4 express buses per day each direction.

To get from the main bus stop in Puerto Viejo to Banana Azul and other Playa Negra hotels the easiest way is just to grab a taxi. The local transport page has expected taxi fares; to Banana Azul expect about 2,000 colones (about $4-5). If you don't have much luggage you can also ask the bus to stop before you reach downtown. There is a stop at Pulperia Violeta (known as Jeffrey's) just before the road reaches the ocean. Banana Azul is about 1km along the beach road to the left while the bus continues about 1km to the right to downtown.

Another option is take a shuttle instead of the public bus. More money but they will drop and pick you up directly from your hotel. Click here for schedules, fares and bookings for the shuttles.

We loved our holiday at the lovely Magic Moon House. There were 6 of us in total. Four adults and two teenagers and everyone had a wonderful time. I loved to get up early, make coffee and sit on the lovely deck overlooking the beach. There were Toucans that sat in a nearby palm and humming birds everywhere. We picked fresh limes and oranges off the trees on your property. We will be back next year and will certainly rent again. The house is clean and has every comfort. The beds are comfortable. We had a lovely rest in your beautiful home. Thank you for sharing!

I have tried the Puerto Viejo area zipline (actually run by Teraventuras not Gecko Trail Adventures, we just sell this tour) and the one at Veragua but never the one in Braulio.

The one in Puerto Viejo is great fun and you do over 20 cables. I also like that you go a bit inland and you see an other side of the Caribbean.

The Veragua Zipline is rather short though good fun too. It is something nice to do in combination with their other tours. However, just for the Ziplining I would not drive there.

Gecko Travel was great to work with. From the initial planning and throughout. They answered all my questions - and I had alot - and made alterations as I requested til we got it just right. While in CR I checked to see if I could have saved money by booking myself and NO it would not have. I also got some immediate help while there that happened on part of the trip I had hoped to 'wing' while there. So I am comfortable to say Gecko is a great service that operates with the client's best interest in mind and does so with professional integrity. Thank you.

Any idea where to buy a bike (other than the hardware store)? I'm here for a few months and a rental would be far too expensive ($100/mo for a VERY used bike). I've tried a couple of rental shops here, but they weren't willing to sell.

There are several options that work for a 2:30pm arrival. Just click on any of the booking links above or here and you'll see all the options from San Jose to Puerto Viejo sorted by departure time.

Gecko Trail Airport express would be the option that would probably be best for you so check with them ASAP to see if it is running on your dates. Otherwise there are private and taxi/bus options.

Wiring money to vacation rental owners account

After a lot of searching I finally found the place in Puerto Viejo where I'd like to stay for 2 weeks in January. The owner has asked that I wire the full amount to his local bank account before I arrive. I'm a little apprehensive since his places aren't on listed on this site, but he does have a website and the places are listed on VRBO.com. I've seen other guesthouses and home rentals where the owner has asked that money be wired to their account before arriving, but am wondering what recourse I'd have if it was a scam. Anyone have any thoughts to share?

This is Nina, the owner of Gecko Trail Adventures. First of all thank you very much for your lovely but also very valuable feedback! I do agree with you that the Bocas One day tour has not the same quality as the ones in Costa Rica. We have been trying to find alternative providers for a while but it is unfortunately not easy. We are also constantly giving feedback to the existing provider so they can imporve their service. We have also sent your feedback to them as we have had complaints about the breakfast part before. I hope the provider is going to at least start to inform people better whilst on the tour.
Thank you again and all the best,

Outstanding Service!

I cannot say enough about how GREAT all our other transfers and tours were! The Costa Ricans go above and beyond to provide OUTSTANDING service and every adventure we booked (with the exception of the Panama outing) exceeded our expectations by far!! I would recommend each and every one of the hotels, shuttles, and tour operators that you booked for us. Thank you so much for making our trip absolutely fantastic! I am so glad I discovered Gecko Travel and will recommend to anyone thinking about a trip to Central America that they book through you – time and again, I told my daughter I was so glad I did not attempt to drive or take public transports – you made our trip seamless and perfect!

I also wanted to leave feedback about the Bocas One Day tour, which was not very much like advertised: “Breakfast” on the boat was a mushy sandwich, apple, and juice box bought by the Panama driver (who did not explain that this was the breakfast) from a local market on our way to the dinghy that took us out looking for dolphins – didn’t explain there would be no restrooms for about 2 hours so if anyone needed to change, they would need to do it before we shoved off as the snorkeling portion would commence about 20 minutes after the dolphin ride and entailed just jumping out of the dinghy. Fortunately, my daughter and I were prepared and had our suits under our clothes – three of the other passengers did not so they didn’t go in the water at all.

The meal at Red Frog Beach was excellent, but the experience was so rushed that swimming at the beach was limited to 30 minutes. This is the only adventure we booked that was less than satisfactory – I am only telling you because you might want to find another company to work with for a Day at Boccas which I do highly recommend – just not that one as it was not the quality that all your others were and I would not want anyone to assume that this was a Gecko tour (some folks might not realize that each operator is independent and you just facilitate).

Gecko Trail Adventures Rules!

Just got back from a 2-week stay in Costa Rica. The first 10 days was spent on an escorted tour, but then I spent 5 days on my own. I had arranged transportation from San Jose to Cahuita through Gecko, and the shuttle (Interbus) picked me up at exactly the arranged time, delivering me to my destination (The Sloth Sanctuary) ahead of my tour time. I then went on to Puerto Viejo and booked 2 tours through Gecko: Combo Jaguar Rescue Center, Bribri Chocolate, and Waterfalls. Again, pick up time was respected, and our guide, Manuel, was professional, courteous, knowledgeable, never rushed us, and did everything he could to make sure we had a great time-mission accomplished!. My last tour with them was white water rafting the Pacuare. It was a first for me, and I was a bit leary, but the guides are very safety conscious, and really have your back. It was an amazing experience, pure adrenaline. You have an option as to where you're dropped off after the rafting, so I chose my next destination, Alajuela where I wiould spend my last 2 nights in CR. It was like getting my return transportation for free. From start to finish, Gecko was an invaluable resource. My e-mails were always answered promptly, and I just feel they go above and beyond. I can't wait for my return visit and I will definitely use Gecko again. All I can say about my entire Costa Rican experience is - PURA VIDA!

Land prices are fairly reasonable but don't expect giveaway prices. Prices for land are generally quoted per square meter. Land prices in the Puerto Viejo area can range from about $10 per m2 to $100+/m2. A hectare is 10,000 m2 and an acre is 4047 m2 so you can do the math there and see you'll pay at least $500,000 USD for a 5 ha piece near the coast.

There are no local and gringo prices, everyone pays the same. The only difference between rules for Costa Ricans and foreigners have to do with the first 250 meters of coastline. In Costa Rican law no one can own that land but you can only get a permission to use it and that permission must be held by a Costa Rican. However, even that small restriction is easily overcome by establishing a Costa Rican corporation. Some cities have exemptions to the 250m rules but in the South Caribbean nothing is finalized.

The other thing to keep in mind in the Puerto Viejo area is that much of the land is the Gandoca-Manzanillo refuge and so there are very restricted covenants about what you do on the land.

Interbus and the other companies are tourist shuttles which are vans which provide door to door service from hotel to hotel. Taxi/Bus is a different type of service; it involves a taxi that picks you up at the airport (or a hotel) and then drives you to a regular bus station (Greyhound style) and includes your ticket on that bus. At your destination you are left at the bus stop in the center of town not at your destination hotel. All this info is on the booking form; if you select the service you want you'll see a lot more info about it.
