We had the time of our lives, the house and area of Puerto Viejo were fantastic, people were easy to get along with and willing to help anytime asked. The area is extremely laid back with lots of places to explore. The beaches were incredible with good for swimming and snorkeling.
The towns in the area are full of activity, restaurants and grocery stores plus you can bye fresh fish, fruit and vegetables without any problem.
Nina is very friendly and will give you good advice when needed plus help you out with anything you need.
If you are looking for a place that is not all caught up in the fast life this is the place to go, we will definitely be going back.

Hello.

I am a 20yr old Dutch student who is currently looking for a 5 month internship starting August 2013. I am seriously considering Puerto Viejo, I was just wondering how hard it is to find affordable acommodation in the center of PV. I am on a student budget so I really don't have that much to spend, but I would like to have a private room and I definitely prefer it to be close to the center. Any tips or comments would help, thank you!

Lot's of questions! Probably be best if you joined a local group which is active in the expat community and asked your questions 1 by 1 and engaged with a locals there. Some of the most active groups are Puerto Viejo Open Forum and the Puerto Viejo Trolling free forum. Both these groups are on facebook and require you to apply for membership.

Briefly:
• English is spoken more in the Caribbean than anywhere else in Costa Rica. Historically the first language of the black residents was English although the language of business and bureaucracy is definitely Spanish now. You'll have no problem getting by on basic Spanish. If anything some people have the opposite complaint that it's hard to learn Spanish here.
• Check the Education page for a list of all the local schools.
• Internet tends to be quite reliable, especially in town or north of town. As you get closer to Manzanillo there may be areas which are not connected to high speed or it is less reliable. Some people also get a USB internet stick and use internet over the cellular networks.
• Good long term rentals are not easy to find; you have to network and talk to people. There is no central broker for long term I know of but there are three vacation rental brokers listed on the vacation rentals page that you can contact and they will arrange monthly rentals to get you started here.
• Depends where you live as to whether you need a car. Close to town not so much. If you're happy carting groceries on a bicycle then that'll be good for the environment and the area!

Thanks for the comment on Puerto Viejo Satellite. We appreciate it!

Moving to Costa Rica interested in Puerto Viejo

Hello my family is planning a move from the USA to Costa Rica in a couple months.
We really really love the Caribbean side of Costa Rica as our interests fit a lot more in this region... but we are struggling to find enough information about living in this area opposed to the samara/nosara area of the nicoya peninsula which is our other region of interest.

Are there many bilingual schools in this area?

How stable is the internet connection and what is the speed?... If it goes down is it down for days or weeks at a time or just a few hours here or there?

How easy is finding a long term rental?

Do you NEED a car or is it a luxury to have one?

We are learning spanish but are not very far along.. is english spoken enough to get by living there with a mix of bad spanish and english?

Can you suggest a good person to contact for long term rentals.

BTW your site is the most informative site I have found for this region of Costa Rica... Thank You!

Hi Marta - I've moved your comment to the transport page and your questions are all basically answered above. 3pm arrival is too late for the last bus — see all the options by clicking here for the transport planner — so to get to Puerto Viejo on that first day you'd need to hire private transport.

There are shuttles from PV to Arenal directly as well as the rafting option. PV to Manuel Antonio is an all day thing via San Jose so do Arenal first is better. Again, the transport planner has all those routings.

Enjoy!

I planned the trip very last minute for spring break in march 2013. gecko trail adventures made it very easy for me to find out all the possibilities, easily book, tours to waterfalls, chocolate making, ziplining etc etc and find just the right combination of adventure and relaxation without the worry of booking all these activities on my own. they were friendly, very helpful, the drivers and staff we met in person were really pleasent. I'll be back and use them again.

The only direct services to PV are from San Jose and Limon. The easiest way to get to PV from Cartago would be to take the bus or train into San Jose and then catch the express bus to PV. If you wanted to be adventurous or really really wanted to avoid San Jose there are buses from Cartago to Turrialba then from there to Siquirres then to Limon then to PV. Check the national bus schedule for details or try entering from Cartago to Puerto Viejo via Turrialba at thebusschedule.com.

Comment on Transportation between Bocas del Toro and Puerto Viejo

What are people saying about us?

Doug

Driving, the border is about an hour from Puerto Viejo. Being south of Puerto Viejo doesn't help, the route to the border doesn't go along the coastal road, you have to return to Puerto Viejo and then go inland to Hone Creek like you're returning to San Jose then turn towards Sixaola (unless you take the "shortcut" which is slow and bumpy and you should have a 4WD for so it isn't really faster). But that only gets you to the border where there is nothing much to see.

To go onto Bocas you then have border formalities, a taxi drive to the boat (you can't take a rental over the border and taking a private car is a lot of paperwork) and a boat ride. Allow 3-4 hours minimum for the whole process. So it's not easy to do as a day trip self organized, especially keeping in mind that the border closes at 5 pm (6 pm Panama time). So if you only have time for a day trip I highly recommend the One day Bocas tour. They've figured out the logistics and made it efficient so you'll actually see something.

Gecko Tour package

We planned our first three week vacation in Costa Rica almost entirely through Gecko tours and everything was so well organized and efficient that I would highly recommend Gecko to others.
We didn't want to rent a car or be dealing with booking tours and hotels while away so I did two full weeks through Gecko. We wanted a C.R. experience so we avoided any Americanized hotels or areas and we were pleased with the shuttles we used and the drivers generally we on time and we meet with many friendly other tourists as we went from one destination to another.
My only complaint/suggestion I would have is that the travel times between specific destinations should have been better spelled out for us. Even after reading tour books we had no idea that some of the shuttle rides would take countless hours to destinations that were not worth the time and agony of
going.
We spent over six hours to go to Monteverde for a zip line tour that was very good but not much else to do in the area to make it worth the drive. Had we known we may still have gone but would have split the drive into two separate drives and stayed overnight in between. In two specific cases I wished Gecko staff would have made the drive time very clear.
But other than that the hotels, shuttles and staff at Gecko were great.

Living costs etc.... on the Carbe Coast

A lot of inquire on this forum about. The above subject. I just came back after spending t hree weeks on the carbe coast C.R. and the Prices for food and boze isn't much cheaper than the U.S. housing is cheaper. could find apts for 200.00 month, but. A gallon of gas was 6.00 U.S. so filling tolur tank is not cheap. Overall the Carbe coast is pretty safe but I safe I would watch it late at night in P.v. as there has been some problems with crime. During the day no problems. Overall, the Carbe coast is a great place to visit, but I am not sure I would want to live there year around. Mic Michael. Questions? Maltfoto@gmail.com

Matina I have never been to and have no idea but I do know there are no direct buses to Puerto Viejo from anywhere but San Jose or Limon. So you'll need to ask locally in Matina how to get a bus to Limon and then transfer to the Puerto Viejo bus. Not sure if there are buses from Matina direct to Limon but certainly there are lots of buses running down Highway 32 enroute to Limon that must stop at the turnoff to pick up people.

Wonderful vacation!

Thanks to the Gecko Trail staff for helping us plan an amazing trip to Costa Rica! We stayed at beautiful hotels Si Como No in Manuel Antonio, Silencio del Campo in Fortuna/Arenal, and Shawandha Lodge in Puerto Viejo) and we had some wonderful adventures (boat and snorkel trip in Manuel Antonio area, ziplining near Arenal, hiking and Tabacon hot springs near Arenal, white water rafting). I highly recommend this travel agency! All communication was excellent and timely, and planned bus trips and tours all went exactly as scheduled. We had one tour cancellation due to weather, but thanks to Gecko, had advance notice so that we could make alternate plans. We will use Gecko Trail again if we decide to go back to Costa Rica!!!

Please read the health and safety page for some tips on safety; take some basic precautions (wherever you go in Costa Rica or travel in general) and you'll have no problems.

Having spent a lot of time in both MA and PV, I'd say the PV area is more suitable for kids. MA doesn't have much in the way of beaches without potentially heavy surf. PV have several, especially Punta Uva (that's it in the pic), which are reef protected and quiet. And there's a ton of activities here; check out the tours and activities page for some choices. The Jaguar Rescue Center for example will be a highlight for them!

Well there are definitely volunteer opportunities for English teaching in the area. The local schools would love to have a native English speaker to help out and I believe I have heard of this. You can try contacting them; the private ones might be easier to reach via the internet but the public ones you'd probably just have to go talk to them. You might also contact The Bridge and see if they need this type of volunteer or can help place your wife.

As far as getting work permission for a non-volunteer permission, the best resource for this type of info is The Association of Residents of Costa Rica. Their website has tons of information on these sorts of topics and forums as well.

I hope you make it down. Sounds like you'd be a great addition to the community. Great to here of someone who's willing to give back!

The public bus may or may not take it depending on space; you'll have to negotiate this with them. The shuttle companies have different rules with regards to surfboards; for the most part they will carry them but you have to tell them in advance and there will be an extra charge. Contact Gecko Trail Adventures to inquire regarding Interbus, their own Gecko Trail Airport Express or other options. Or contact Easy Ride to ask about their policy/extra charge.

Comment on Gecko Trail Costa Rica

What are people saying about us?

Larisa Leonova from Victoria BC, Canada

We spent 10 very adventurous days in Costa Rica from January 21 to 31, 2013. We really liked to travel with Gecko Trail Adventures because of their flexibility and willingness to accommodate clients needs in the best way. We bought the Coast-to-Coast package, but could adjust our itinerary to what we wanted to see and to extend our stay. Thank you to Nadieh and Ernesto who were very patient answering all questions and dispelling our concerns about travelling in Costa Rica. The whole trip was very organized and everything went smooth. Hotels where we stayed, in general, were OK. First night we stayed in Adventure Inn, and it was a small but comfortable hotel close to the International airport, but quite far from downtown of San Jose (we needed to take a taxi and pay about $40 to go to see San Jose); however it was a very quiet and nice area. We were really satisfied with the hotel in Manuel Antonio - Villa Bosque. Such a good place to stay - everything was close - a beautiful beach, restaurants, the park . Only La Isla Inn in Puerto Viejo was a bit simple hotel, and the Internet there was very poor or even absent at all, but the location of the hotel (a beach was just across the street) compensated that simplicity. We loved Costa Rica, and all tours that we were offered by Gecko highlighted best of their country. We really enjoyed sailing and snorkeling tour in Manuel Antonio, zip-lining, hiking and swimming in hot springs in Arenal.
However, my story is not only about absolutely amazing wild nature, beaches or weather that you can meet in Costa Rica, my story is about costa rican people. During the rafting on the Pacuare river at Arenal Volcano I fell down and broke my leg in two spots. That wasn't somebody's fault, that was an accident, because the rafting itself provided by Exploradores Outdoors was well organized. When it happened with me it became a huge problem to get me out from the boat in the middle of jungles and to bring me to the hospital. I was very scared, shocked and in pain. Staff was very helpful and efficient. They phoned to the centre and a car was sent to pick me up; a mountain road was almost impassable, but a driver did a miracle and safely got me to the closest hospital in Siquirres. It was Saturday, and X-Ray didn't work there. Local doctor, a nice lady, didn't want to put me at risk and arranged an ambulance and sent me to another city - Limon that was about 60 km away from Siquirres. In Limon I got X-Ray, but to get a proper treatment I had to wait for a specialist who was called out from his home on weekend just for me. I am really appreciate everything what Dr. Tony Facio Castro and nurse Ines Cortes did for me in the Caja Costarricense De Seguro Social Hospital, it let me came back to Canada safely. I have to say thank you to the company that provided the rafting, they patiently waited for me and arranged a special transportation from the hospital to Talamanca, our next destination. Also, I have a hearty thanks for our guide Andreas, he got off with us in jungles and accompanied the rest of the day everywhere; without his help it would be hard for us to communicate and understand specialists because we knew only one Spanish word "gracias". The most pleasantly surprising thing was that NOBODY and NOWHERE in Costa Rica asked me about money for a medical assistance even though I was a foreigner there and had a travel insurance. (You could compare what would be with you in USA or even Canada in case like that, how many papers and problems!). In Costa Rica the only thing I had pay for were my crutches.
Gecko Travel was immediately informed about what happened with me, they didn't leave us alone, and showed a real concern for me; moreover, they cancelled the rest of our activities and returned money. That was our first time in CR, but looking forward, I will definitely have deals with Gecko and recommend it to all my friends.
In spite of that accident, we enjoyed our trip to Costa Rica, and think about going there again.

I just arrived in Puerto Viejo last night and rode the bus from San Jose. There's no racks but the underbelly of the bus is used for storage of luggage and opens up on both ends, I believe it's deep enough for a 28" surfboard, the width of the bus is probobly about 6 feet so you should be fine.

The traffic is the worst in the afternoons so it could take 5 hours easily to drive. So try and be past Limon before dark (just before 6). The last section between Limon and PV is the least complicated and you shouldn't get lost. You will be driving the short section from PV to the Tree House in the dark so just make sure you get good directions on where it is.

Hi Doug,
My soon-to-be wife and I will be traveling to CR in April for about 9 days. 7 of those days we will be staying in PV at the Tree House Lodge. Since I checked and Private Transit is pretty pricey, I'm renting a car. Is this a decent option? I know gas is typically quite expensive down there. We will be renting bikes for the 7 days in PV, but my question is just this: arriving at 12 p.m. (noon), is that too late to be traveling from SJ to PV?

Sorry, I haven't traveled that route by bus. You should be able to piece it together with the national bus schedule here. Or I would suggest checking with your destination hotel in Turialba for the best directions. There are frequent buses from PV to Limon and from Limon to San Jose that will stop in Siquirres (the PV to San Jose bus might stop in Siquirres on request, you'd have to ask at the MEPE office in PV when purchasing a ticket). On the schedule linked above you'll see frequent buses listed between Turrialba and Siquirres if you scroll down to the Siquirres section. Private transport is also a faster but more expensive option.

Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful!

I'm not sure of the exact rate for Coco Loco but they are really close to downtown so it shouldn't be much. Guidelines for taxi rates, which start at 1,500 colones ($3) are on the local transport page.

Hi Doug!
Do you know how much it would cost to grab a taxi from the bus station in PV to Coco Loco Lodge?
Thanks in advance for your reply and what an amazing and helpful website you have!

Easter weekend and dry law

This year all bar and restaurant can sell alcohol like any other time of the year during Easter Weekend after abolishing the 80 year old dry law prohibiting it. Liquor stores and super markets can as well.

A new law has made it illegal to drink in public places outside of restaurants and bars though I beat the enforcement will be spotty at best

Well it is nothing like Mexico. Costa Rica has always put a high level of priority on public health and generally water from the public systems is safe to drink. I would never hesitate to drink tap water it in San Jose and other large centers. In Puerto Viejo it is a little trickier as some areas are on municipal water and some are on well water and the municipal water as well has been running quite low in some areas south of town as well so if there are to be any problems that would be when it would occur.

That said, it will never be like Mexico. You won't get sick from a salad or something washed in the water. I find that as a visitor it is a reasonable precaution to drink bottled water but I have never had any issues brushing my teeth or cooking with the tap water.

Costa Rica has always had "dry" laws for Semana Santa -- not the whole week but 3 or 4 days around the weekend. During that time it was not permitted to sell alcohol in either restaurants or stores. So the result is that people stocked up beforehand and the beaches and streets were full of drinkers which of course created many problems. Some restaurants and bars flouted the rule but not many since losing your liquor license was a big risk.

The good news is that I just heard last night that this is changing this year for the first time. I don't have all the details but it sounds like restaurants and bars will be allowed to serve all weekend. Hopefully this will keep the streets and beaches cleaner and safer. I am not sure about the stores so I assume they will still not be allowed to sell alcohol for several days.
