We spent 17 days in Costa Rica in January 2014 but I was in contact with Gecko Trail Adventures well before that. Once I knew where we wanted to go and where we wanted to stay, I asked Gecko Trail Adventures to make the transportation and accommodation arrangements. This company provided a very efficient and professional service and when itinerary changes had to be made due to Air Canada cancelling certain flights, one phone call to Gecko and they made all our changes for us. All transportation arrived at least 10 minutes before they were due to arrive so there was no waiting around. I asked Gecko to try and reserve certain rooms for us at some of the lodges and they were successful in doing so.

Help please

Hi,

I'll be coming out to CR at the beginning of July for 6 months so thought it would be good to connect and start to plan my trip now.
I hope to be doing some charity work for the Bridge project , El Puente--The Bridge is located in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca but looking for advice on airport transfer, affordable accommodation local area etc...
I'm also open to any other suggestions that may enhance or enrich my trip.

My professional background here in the UK is a personal Trainer specialising in cancer rehab and back complaint. I have a real passion for life and meeting new people.
Looking forward to hearing from you

Best wishes

Thank you Gecko Trail Adventures

Gecko Trail Adventures were amazing from start to finish. They helped us plan what was one of the best trips I could have asked for; they listened to our needs, were flexible with our amends and just helpful with suggestions and advice throughout. When we actually arrived it Costa Rica, our experience far surpassed what we were expecting. The accommodation was incredible and the transfers were on time and on the whole comfortable! Thank you fr making our Costa Rica experience so fantastic...i will be back in touch when I plan my return.

Peak Season Trip

Gecko knows their tours. I felt that each tour Gecko booked was the best of the area's tours. Best zipline, best ATV, best hike guides, etc.
The tour planners couldn't have been better. The responsiveness, patience, good humor, and competence were amazing.
We were there at peak season so you have to have some patience, but the tours didn't always pick up on time which was annoying, but only about 15 minutes behind schedule. The one tour that was 45 minutes late, both Gecko and the tour operator called to let us know.
I think if it wasn't Christmas week, it would have been smoother.

I'm not sure where the cruise ship terminal is but you will definitely want to take a taxi even if it's close just for security reasons. The bus from Limon to Puerto Viejo is a local bus, so stops a fair bit. As you can see from the schedules above it takes about 1 1/2 hours. You can also book private transport for $60 each way (per vehicle not per person) at this link

Johnny’s Place, a beloved institution in the southern Caribbean beach town of Puerto Viejo known for its reggaeton and R&B DJs, has closed following a shooting early Sunday morning. Club owner Johnny León says it might be for good.

“No one died this time, but I don’t want to be caught in a crossfire again,” León said.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a man pulled out a gun and opened fire inside the bar, wounding five people, according to Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigative Police (OIJ).

Vacation

I had a great trip in Costa Rica, one of Gecko's friendly staff (Ernesto) had everything planned from arriving at airport to my fantastic wonderful stay at Mother Dear, which had every thing I needed and more. The owners of Mother Dear made me feel so very welcomed and special. The view of the garden and the sounds of the waves from my balcony was amazing. My stay at all other locations was fabulous, the rooms, food and their transportation was always on time . I didn't have to worry about how I was going from one destination to another, every thing was all planned to a tee, including places to go for very nice dinners, right up till time of departure to airport. Gecko really knows how to plan your vacation so that its a breeze and enjoyable for you. I highly recommend Gecko Trails for all your vacation needs. FYI Gecko Trail Adventures has a very warm, knowledgable staff that treat you like family.

Advice

I read through some of the comments asking about the safety of PV. My sister and her friend (both 23) are currently visiting there, left July 4th and will be returning home next week. Since they've been there it's been one thing after another, unfortunately I feel like a lot could have been prevented by common sense. They've both been sick from the water so drink bottled water or boil it before drinking. My sisters friend had Dengue Fever and was pretty miserable for 2 weeks. Take lots of bug spray! They've spent a considerable amount of time in the jungle though and my sister also worked at a wild life sanctuary so they've had a lot of exposure. The worst thing was my sister was mugged coming home alone from a bar (don't walk around alone at night!) and pretty violently beat up. Ended up with a lot of face & hand wounds and a concussion from being kicked in the head several times, she was lucky he didn't have a weapon. He ended up with the equivalent of $4.00/US that she had in her pocket. This was about 3 weeks ago. On the plus side after all that they really love it there! Haha They say the locals are great and they've made a lot of friends and my sisters friend is a photographer and shes been sending the most amazing photographs from her portfolio. Sounds like a beautiful place but just be safe, especially women on their own. Don't walk around alone and be aware of the people around you. Also if anyone knows the best clinic in that area I'd be really grateful. Sister is now really sick (unrelated to all that above), not sure with what, and needs to be seen tomorrow.

As silly and annoying as it sounds, the short answer is yes. When you are entering Panama, they MAY demand to see your ticket for leaving Panama. For your route that would be the ticket from David to Golfito I guess. These rules do depend do be enforced somewhat inconsistently though. If one has a coherent plan (as you do) and can show you have the financial means to purchase your tickets they may not enforce the rule.

After Puerto Viejo our trip will take us over the Panama border and onto Boquete then David. From David we will travel back over the Southern CR border and will explore Gofito and eventually head to San Jose.

If we have booked in advance an outbound flight back to the US from San Jose, do we still need to "prove' our departure date from Panama with a bus ticket or something similar when we are coming back into Panama from Costa Rica?

Either driving or taking the local bus are good options. The bus schedule is here between Cahuita and Sixaola. The bus does make a lot of stops though, picking up someone every couple of hundred meters it seems so it would be significantly faster to drive. On the other hand, if you take the bus there's no need to pay for parking or worry about finding the parking lot or anything. Hope that helps!

Renewing visa

Pablo , look up what the requirements are , if you are from Ecuador and entering and exiting Costa Rica. Some countries , you can only stay for 30 days , some 90. I am not sure....it is different for every country you are a resident of (entering Costa Rica) The 72 hour is if you buy over $5oo in products from the country that you enter , and then come back into Costa Rica. Otherwise , a 3 hour stay is required. Good luck...I know it is nerve racking !

Unfortunately that won't work. Unless something has changed recently or the rules differ by nationality you must be outside of Costa Rica for at least 72 hours before you can reenter and get a new validity stamp. There is also apparently now a way to renew at the main immigration office in San Jose. However I understand it is a lot of bureaucracy and you can only get another 30 days that way I think.

Here's another link which details the 72 hour requirement:

Thanks for all the helpful information. I'll be in San Jose on business, and wanted to salvage two days in Puerto Viejo over the weekend before flying home. I was planning on renting a car and making my way to Playa Negra, but now am wondering whether I should just arrange private transport there and back. I'll be staying in Puerto Viejo, but want to scuba dive in Cahuita. Will I need a rental car to get between Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, or are there enough options that I'll be fine if I rely on private transport? Thanks in advance.

PV myths-- "BUSTED!"

After spending 4 weeks on vacation in PV with my wife and 3 children in the last 2 years, I agree nearly 100% and consider these myths "busted".

When my wife and i stayed at a resort in Guanacaste and visited Arenal in 2010, we were encouraged to "stay away from the Carribean side" when asking what the eastern lowlands and coast were like. After spending a horrible vacation in MX in 2011, in 2012 we visited PV in February and again during 2013 in April. The warmth and humidity of the weather AND THE PEOPLE were a welcome break from harsh winters in the midwest.

We are very conservative people that like to keep to ourselves; living out in Western rural Iowa. We disdain the "Disney/resort/Wal-Mart" crowd that are merely interested in a warm destination; eating from unauthentic, never-ending, buffets, and swim-up bars. Instead we travel to learn about the places, experience the people, engage the culture, and teach our kids about the world.

After 4 weeks in PV taking excursions with Junior, having the kids hair braided by Celia, eating the best the Carribean has to offer at Soda Lidias, and enjoying the gorgeous and unlittered beaches of Manzanillo, we have never been disappointed.

If you want to be waited on hand and foot and gorge yourself with food and drink like the 40% or so obese Americans we live with every day, go to the Pacific side. They are more than willing to greet you. If you are looking for a true adventure and want to meet some of the most down to earth, genuine, and caring people on the planet, rent a car and make the journey to PV. You will be glad you did!

Great Honeymoon!

My new husband and I had nothing to stress about on our vacation, Gecko Trail arranged everything and it was so easy! There was only one pickup that was missed and we called them and they were there within 10 minutes and refunded us 50% of the cost of the excursion we were late for. The only other complaint that I had was that we went on a waterfall hike and I checked the "things to bring" list and it did not include a bathing suit so we didn't bring them, then it turns out that you can swim right under this gorgeous waterfall and we missed out on that! Those were the only setbacks though and we stayed for a whole week so I'd say it was overall really great. The whole trip was a breeze and we would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you SO much Gecko Trail! We love you!

Puerto Viejo Safety

My husband and I are coming to Puerto Viejo for our honeymoon late August. Reading the crime and safety issues have not made us feel very comfortable. While researching coming here we had decided that if we didn't wear flashy jewelry or look like an easy target we would be safe. It also doesn't hurt that he's a big, burly, mean looking guy. It seems though that the robberies have become more violent. Should we be worried? Also he wants to bring a taser along should a robbery escalate to violence. Bad idea???? I think so, he does not. Any feedback is welcome.

Doug is sooo right! I just crossed at Sixiola and once you get transport in Panama , there are checks for documentation ..we were stopped , coming and going. The best thing to do is go to the Embassy in San Jose and order a new passport..you need to make an appt online and show up and order it. It took about 10 days or so to get an email from them...saying it was ready to pick up. Pretty painless! Cost $110 and we got the extra pages added for no charge. They may even be able to give you a temporary paper to keep , til the real passport comes in. Good luck!

I would NOT recommend this. You can walk across the border easily enough but if you get in a bus or vehicle to take you beyond Guabito the chances of getting stopped by the police are very high. If you've lost your passport you simply need to visit the consulate for your country in San Jose and get it replaced. If you get caught crossing illegally you could be subject to being permanently banned from Costa Rica or Panama or other penalties.

Locals cross the international bridge all the time back and forth with no one looking at their passports. Last time I was there, there were no gates or guardhouses that stopped you from just walking by.

However, you can get into serious trouble once you've crossed the border if you don't have proper crossing documents. Police checkpoints sometimes happen past the border zone as well as could happen routinely anywhere.

So the information above was simply to let travellers know that despite it looking like you can just walk over the border without stopping, it is VERY important to make sure they stop in both the Costa Rican and Panamanian customs offices on entering and leaving the country. North Americans are not used to the idea of customs checking our passports upon exiting the country so travelers from the USA and Canada need to be advised to make sure to check in at the Costa Rica station upon leaving Costa Rica to get the proper exit documentation.

Gasoline cost is similar to Canada; so about 30-40% more than the United States I'd say. The secondary route via Cartago is somewhat more scenic but there are no volcanoes enroute to the Caribbean per se. If you're getting on the road at 2 pm you will want to take the main route though, you'll already probably be arriving after dark if you get traffic or make stops. It can take anywhere from 3 1/2 to 5 hours on the main route. The Cartago route is longer and there is a lot less signage so you might consider it for the way back.

Totem is just a few minutes drive from PV down the coastal road, very easy to find.

Review of Trip to Costa Rica

Dear Lidieth,

We just returned from our spectacular trip to Costa Rica at 10 pm last night. In between loads of laundry, I decided I must find the time to tell you how thrilled we are.
First of all, you were so helpful in planning our customized itinerary. Every question I had was answered completely. By the time we left I felt we had a personal friend and connection in Cost Rica!
Upon arrival we were met at the airport by Adventure Inn.
The transportation arrangements were seamless. Each ride arrived early, but always allowed us the few extra minutes we often needed to gather our teens and baggage. I could not believe that even on days when we took a private van to a bus to a boat (!) how it all occurred smoothly, everyone smiling, and on time. We usually had private transport so it did not feel like a "tour" and my husband did not have to drive and I didn't have to navigate! We could both just sit back and relax.
The hotels were clean and nicely appointed; we always had plenty of room for ourselves and our three kids were never cramped sharing a room.
The guides and outings were exceptional, friendly, well informed and helpful. Each outing seemed super safe with lots of instruction to make sure there were no accidents.

Above all of the fun, wonderful guides, great hotels, was the opportunity my husband and I had to connect with our kids. It is hard to connect with teenagers in our busy lives. Our teenagers are a little tough, don't always want to talk or tell us what they are up to. But, on this trip they were happy, appreciative and we had the time and space to have some wonderful talks and lots of fun together. This is a vacation I'm sure none of us will forget.

Thanks again for all of your assistance. I will try to write mentions of everything on trip advisor but especially wanted you to know how much we appreciated all of your help, kind concern, and AFFORDABILITY. We could never have planned this on our own. Thanks to everyone there.

Sincerely,
Lisa DiGiorgio-Haag

Hi My husband and I are traveling to PV in Dec 2013, flying into SJ. I think that renting a vehicle is the best bet for us. Our plane lands at 12:45 pm, so im thinking that will be enough time to get on the road before 2pm. My questions are:
how expensive should I expect the fuel to cost in the country?
which route is better for viewing things like the volcanos or anything else that might interest us to stop and take picture?
we are staying at the Totem beach hotel, are you aware of how easy or difficult it is to gett here from PV?

thank you for you time, we are super excited to explore this country

We had a great trip and I'm so glad that we had Gecko organize everything for us. Every ride was on time and, though the roads were a bit scary, the drivers did an excellent job of getting us to our next excursion or destination. All the places we stayed were lovely. Only one excursion was cancelled due to a thunderstorm, but we got our money back for that. Everyone was so friendly. I think going with Gecko is the only way to go.

Bad experience

We bought one time and it was not what we expected. The small piece of chicken was around 3 000 colones. We paid in dollars and the exchange rate was not fair also. When we smelled it was not fresh and we wanted to get our money back, but the seller was very rude and we were almost fighting. It was a great disappointment in the beginning of the day. I don't know the customers law in CR, but I'm sure we had the rights to get our money back. P.S. We can recommend to buy chicken or other meat at Mega Super or at the Farmers' Market on Saturday, but not from these guys for sure.

Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Limon-South Caribbean side

In response to what I keep reading about this area, I feel everyone has their own opinion or circumstances that forms them. I was born In Panamá, and have family with property in this area for generations. We have been victims of the shortcuts that some use to get ahead such as being robbed in broad daylight in San José while the authorities looked on as if nothing happened. However, I know that this kind of things happens there more than other areas. Just like the Lion knows where to hunt, these people that do this prey on folks who walk right into their hunting ground. Although being born in this area of the world, and living in the big apple for years, I can honestly say that crime is everywhere, and you just hope you never have to go through something like this, but due to the noted conditions you should know that your chances are higher there. Everyone knows that where there's poverty there's higher cases of crime, and it doesn't take a genius to figure this out. However, due to the long struggles of the Caribbean people and their ancestors, you can see how much progress has been made on the long run, and this is not going unnoticed because you can see that tourist still come from all over the world as I will continue too. Most people go to visit an area that left a shining light inside them for ever. I just happened to be born with it, and I hope that most of you that visit Puerto Viejo and its vicinity to really enjoy the best it has to offer, for it really has a lot. Just note that this area someday will be in your heart if its what you're looking for.
