I recently visited these areas and LOVED the beautiful scenery and the amazing people who live here. It would be horrible for any of these businesses to be destroyed. Is there anything we can do to help stop it? Please email me at thesarahb@gmail.com

Koki Beach restaurant and bar is a fantastic establishment that serves excellent food and drinks and plays great music. the building is in good repair and demolishing it would be a waste of precious wood (something that Costa Rica prides itself on not wasting). as a recent visitor of several months I took great pleasure in enjoying all of the beachfront amenities to enjoy the view. El Diamonte store was a blessing as it was so close to where I stayed and provided a valuable service close to the beach. I agree with Maria that at the least these buildings could be put to a better use to serve the public or perhaps concession could be granted with a fee and perhaps a penalty for not applying ahead for the concession application. As a tourist i can say that alot of the "flavour" of Puerto Viejo and cauhuita will be lost with the removal of the buildings.

I know officials have released the names of nine buildings in this most recent list of demolitions, but what of the other 76 that I see mentioned in the news articles? Does anyone know what they are?

The destruction of Suerre and Las Palmas hotels was, IMHO, a personal revenge of some Limón based officials against the (now deceased)Jan Kalina. Some Minaet officials with more common sense, who felt that the boat was being rocked excessively, were recently suspended from their job.
Mirenem annals and court decisions dating between 1991 and 1996 if still available (i.e. not destroyed)at their San Jose biblioteca, may give some insight to the sources of to-day's consequences.

Anyone who has seen the rubble that once was the Hotel Las Palmas in Punta Uva can testify how devastating this will be. First of all, no one can afford to actually clean up the demolition, making the entire area look like the ghetto, just like Las Palmas. Don't even get me started on how it will destroy the local economy and culture.

Al destruir los dos hoteles en Puerto Viejo, everything is a mess, they didn´t clean anything, the beach look so bad now, the Government could take care nowww, what they did not all these years, what done is done, they could use those buildings for an activity of interest for local, residents and tourist people (librarys, tourist center, social activities ... schools, sanitary, and a long etc ...). this is such a bad action rule reference, I heard it so much from tourist people,
To destroy is never a good action.
Whats next for those places??
new big hotels ??

I hope a positive action is done about this.

Costa Rica has a law which prohibits construction within 200 meters of the coast - so how it is possible that the new school building will be built just beside the road?? this is still the 200 meter
ZONE. ??

It is certainly true that this action will create extreme distrust of the Costa Rican legal system which will definitely harm investment not only in the Talamanca but elsewhere in Costa Rica. I will work my hardest to bring awareness of these actions to the United States public. It is beyond understanding especially on the heals of a visit to the United States from President Chinchilla recently to ask for increased investment in Costa Rica.

Doug, Thank you so much for your reply. I must have misunderstood the poster I was referring to. We all truly enjoyed this area so much. We are planning a trip spring 2014. Will book a tour to see the turtles come ashore and be careful not to disturb their environment. The reason we choose this area was partially due to this site. We wanted a jungle/rainforest/beach vacation. We wanted to experience the environment, not be secluded in a/c,tv,phony room. The vacation was all we dreamed of(for over a year) and more. The 4 of us rode bikes everyday, swam, experienced every adventure offered that we could fit in(whitewater rafting, kayaking, jungle hikes, Panama tour, snorkeling, dolphin watch, punta mona trip, bri bri chocolate tour and iguana rescue, waterfalls, we enjoyed every moment in Costa Rica. People friendly, easy money exchange, easy language barrier. We can't wait to go back! Thank you to this website for all your information. I have passed it along to everyone I know.
