New telecommunications equipment was flown into Limon to restore service. Photo by Guillermo Solano, courtesy of La Nación

A fire at the ICE Telephone Company building in Limon on Tuesday night left thousands of Caribbean residents without phone, internet and cellular services.  ICE said services were restored by 3pm Wednesday but some reported continuing problems after this.

The fire took out landline, internet and users on the old cellular network. While the GSM cellular network was not affected it was overburdened and often not available either.

The agency flew in new equipment and worked first on restoring 9-1-1 emergency services.

If this is restored service, it is not very good in Punta Uva de Puerto Viejo. The 3 G stick is weak and cuts in and out all this month. And there is still no cell phone here this minute!

Yes, let us that actually live here and use the service decide what is “restored”

We are still without phone service (both cell and landline) Landline works if we call in same exchange and only in a very limited geographic area. We in Playa Negra can call 2750 #’s in Playa Negra and Puerto Viejo, but not anywhere else. And of course there is no incoming calls from outside this area.

I hear town is having problems as no one can process credit cards and ATM is empty.

Yuck! Oh well… Welcome to developing countries. Everyday seems to be an adventure whether you are ready for it or not.
