The food in Puerto Viejo is not that great. In addition the prices are way too high based on quality and service. Pizza prices are about 30% more than in the US. However, these are good pizzas. Best pizza, bar none, is in Cocles in new place called Terrazza or something like that. Name of the guy who makes it is Jimmy. He is a Rusta Man. Couple of places I would recommend are Chile Rojo and restaurant at the end of the road in Manzanillo.
Place I don’t recommend is Italian place called Pecora Nera. Very expensive.

Overall food ain’t that great and very expensive for third world country.

I find the food in PV-Manzanillo area some of the most varied and finest I’ve ever experienced. Prices may not be backpacker friendly, but still cheap as compared to N. America/Eurpoe.

Pecora Negra was phenomenal. I couldn’t afford to eat here everyday, but to budget for a farewell meal here was well worth it. Our party of 4 all thought it was the best meal we’ve ever experienced.

Although you can drop some serious cash at places like Chile Rojo, Cafe Viejo, and Pecora Nera, there is also some great places like Lidias, Miss Sam. Soda Joana, where you can can some local foods for around $4-$5 US.

It goes without saying that Puerto Viejo is one of the most diverse cultural places in Costa Rica, restaurants also included.
