Rapist Jailed
Posted by Editor | May 23, 2009 | Categories: Crime & Punishment | 13 Comments
The much talked about sexual offender in Playa Chiquita area has been arrested and is in jail. He was identified with bite marks and scratch marks after an attempted assault late at night along main road leading south of town. The victim managed to escape her attacker, but did require multiple stitches.
She remained in the area after the attack to identify the suspect. The suspect has been given 6 months preventative prison while awaiting trial. During that time, investigators will also attempt to get evidence linking him to previous assaults.
The recent arrest comes as a result of very active members in the business community who worked relentlessly and would not give up on making sure this person was apprehended. Local community members hope that this latest arrest results in a guilty verdict and this chapter is closed.

I believe it was attempted rape and definite assault. The victim has 21 stitches, and many other injuries, which in my mind means Assault, not attempted assault.
This guy needs to get what he deserves, and I hope that happens and he never comes back into the area . I send out my thoughts to all of the victims and their families too. Women can rest a little easier!
i hate to go under the nom de plume of “anonymous” but it seems (possibly) appropriate in this case for safety reasons. i was peripherally involved in the case on the night of the attack, and subsequently made several trips with the victim to the fiscalia in bribri, as well as to fuerza publica in puerto viejo.
the piece of the story i believe you missed was that the subject was apprehended by THE POLICE, and that it was through the efforts of the fiscalia, OIJ, and fuerza publica that it now seems highly likely that a strong case against the suspect will proceed. yes there were a number of local business people involved in assisting the victim to move her case forward through the procedural requirements of the investigation (which are onerous to the victim in virtually any legal system, and especially so when conducted in a foreign language), but at the end of the day it was cooperation between the victim, various law enforcement agencies and locals assisting that built this case.
so i think that when giving credit, it is important to give it where it is due, and in this case you have left out the fiscalia, OIJ, and fuerza publica, which is, in the opinion of this anonymous commenter, a large and serious omission that paints an incomplete picture of what occurred.
I am curious why the identity of this person is not being revealed. I have spoken with local business people who wish to stay in complete denial of this. Out of fear of retribution or fear for their businesses?? Something’s not right here. What kind of power are we talking about? Neither the Tico Times, a.m. Costa Rica, or Talamanca Times are revealing a name. I will think twice about coming back to PV if such collusion occurs to protect the wealthy and powerful but SICK.
yeah, but it’s public information at this point. clearly the evidence against him is strong enough to keep him in prison until the trial, and let’s face it, there are people who deny the Holocaust.
Rolando Brown is the accused serial rapist, and that is the cold hard truth until he’s officially “convicted” –which I hope and pray is very soon.
Do you think Rolando Brown’s family was negligent for knowing about his criminal activities of raping and terrorizing women –but they did nothing about it? Do you think his family should have forced Rolando Brown to go to therapy or forced him to go into a private psychiatric hospital? Do you feel it was negligent of them to stand by and do nothing while he repeatedly raped and beat dozens of women for years?
How old is Rolando Brown? Who is Rolando Brown? Did he work? Or did he just rape women?
By the way, I am in no relation to Rolando Brown…
Laughing my ass off! I’m not sure it matters if he’s 20 years old or 50 years old, or if he has a job as a this or a that…the point is, and unfortunately for the victims, their friends, their families, and their communities, he IS a rapist. He has served years and years in prison and was released from prison –but tragically he continued to rape, assault, and do many other violent acts towards women. Is he also being charged with attempted robbery of several other people?? So really, does it matter what his demographics are –whether he is white or black, job or unemployed, etc..??? There is NO excuse for violence and no excuse for rape. I don’t care if your uncle or your father raped you as a child, there is NO excuse for violence or rape.
Marcela Oviedo, owner of the restaurant Francini, worried about the harm that such acts cause to tourism. “It has lowered the number of tourists who visit us, because there are problems with drugs and assaults. We need more police presence”, said Oviedo.
So shout it to the RAPIST, not us, that there is no excuse for what he is doing and should be behind bars. If “he” is of your own skin color/demographics, I understand, but cannot condone, your sensitivity to the matter, for fear of generalized prejudice.
However, my question is: why have ALL Costa Rican newspapers chosen (been asked to?) cover up his name? Of course, they fear it would hurt the area tourism if it were publicized there is a seriel rapist loose. But would it will be worse if word gets out that such actions go unchecked and unreported “on the Caribbean side” for years, and area businesses are behind such cover-ups?
Would one or two more patrolmen in a 10 mile stretch keep him from raping? I think not. What were the local political dynamics at work that kept him from being convicted long ago? That is the key question.
everybody kicked ass and made it happen lots of love to all involved. you know who you are.

When is the trial and is it open to the public? I would like to see the community stand together and unite to help send the message to the Officials to put this guy away for as long as possible with no early release or parole.
