Road Open to San Jose
Posted by Editor | November 25, 2008 | Categories: Transport | 4 Comments
Transportes MEPE is reporting this morning that the buses are running on the normal schedule and normal route and that the road between Limon and San Jose is now clear.
Reports are also that the Margarita Road route between Cocles and Margarita is open so 4WD vehicles which want to get around the broken bridge at Playa Negra in Puerto Viejo to drive into town or to Cocles, Chiquita and Punta Uva can go that way.
(Almost) back to normal here on the Caribbean!

Hey Doug: I can confirm that Margarita Road is OPEN. (I live on it, 1.5 kilometers in) – I asked drivers coming and going both ways into Margarita. Most the the new $10k worth of lastrate that was put on a couple weeks ago has washed off though – sorry Ned! (he was in charge of the work on it) – and in parts it’s looking like a river bed – but it’s fine for 4×4 and dirt bikes.
Was it really only two days ago that I was wading in chest high water for 200 meters on this road to get my wife home and dogs home? we’ll all have some good stories to share at Arte Viva – ;^)
ps: For anyone wishing to take the Margarita Road alternate route, please see this map of the route and notes on where the bad areas are. It gets dangerous during heavy rains (see the photo of the overturned truck at the bottom of the page): http://www.tropicalreservations-cr.com/b/?p=1086
i wanted to thanks the ICE crew and all the volunteers from Manzanillo for their fast restoration of the light 6 posts went down and they worked in the pouring rain till 9 pm last night that show some good team work. hope in Puerto the bridge will go that fast.Thank you again good job
ICE was awesome during all of this. We had power and electricity through almost the entire time on Margarita Road – amazing. And I know that at the time that truck missed the little narrow bridge on the road here, the water lever above the bridge was about a meter and a half high, so those guys were truly lucky to get out of that truck since the cab was upside down, IN THE MUD and covered with at least 2 meters of water, bless ‘em.
Our ICE guys were really on the ball here – many thanks to them…
